Methane emission from livestock agriculture industry is a significant contributor to global

warming. The transition from open lot feeding to CAFOs presented a problem with manure
management. CAFOs use wet manure management to take care of all the waste, however, the
waste sits in a lagoon causing fermentation and thus creating a huge amount of methane. A
solution to this would be to harness the usable energy from the manures. Loyd Ray farm, located
in North Carolina, were one of the first to attempt this solution to curb methane emission.
Methane gas and Carbon Dioxide are created using bacterial that turns bio material into GHG, and
then those gas are stored and then heated to push a turbine that provided enough electricity to
70% of the farms total electric use. This solution not only reduces methane emission but also
saves on other emission such as the ones used to power the power plant that powers the farm.
This solution is self-sustaining, green, and creates an incentive for farmers to do so since it will
save them money on electricity.
