PHY1121 DISCUSSION GROUP SEPTEMBER 24, 2014

1. The speed of a particle moving in a circle 3.0 m in diameter increases at a constant

rate of 4.0 m/s2. At a particular instant, the magnitude of the total acceleration of the
particle is 6.0 m/s2. The speed of the particle (in m/s) at this instant is
A) 3.7.
B) 3.0.
C) 2.6.
D) 2.4.
E) None of the above.

2. An airplane, whose air speed is 680 km/h, is supposed to fly in a straight path 35.0 N
of E. But a steady 120 km/h wind is blowing from the north. In what direction should
a plane head?

3.

A block is pushed across a horizontal surface by the force shown. If the coefficient of
kinetic friction between the block and the surface is 0.30, F = 20 N, = 30, and M =
3.0 kg, what is the magnitude of the acceleration of the block?
A) 2.8 m/s2
B) 2.3 m/s2
C) 1.8 m/s2
D) 3.3 m/s2
E) None of the above.

4.

An inventive child named Brian wants to reach an apple in a tree without climbing the
tree. Sitting in a chair connected to a rope that passes over a frictionless pulley, Brian
pulls on the loose end of the rope with such a force that the spring scale reads 250 N.
Brians weight is 320 N, and the chair weighs 160 N. (a) Draw free-body diagrams
for Brian and the chair considered as one system. (b) Show that the acceleration of
the system is upward and find its magnitude. c) Find the force Brian exerts on the
chair.

5.

Mass m1 on a frictionless horizontal table is connected to mass m2 by means of a very

light pulley P1 and a light fixed pulley P2, as shown in the figure. (a) If a1 and a2 are
the accelerations of m1 and m2, respectively, what is the relationship between these
accelerations? Express (b) the tensions in the strings and (c) the accelerations a1 and
a2 in terms of the masses of m1 and m2 and g.

6.

A block of mass 3.00 kg is pushed up against a wall by a force P that makes a 50

angle with the horizontal, as shown in the figure. The coefficient of static friction
between the block and the wall is 0.250. Determine the possible values for the
magnitude of P that allow the block to remain stationary.

7. A flatbed truck carries a box. The coefficient of static friction between the box and
the truck is s = 0.3. What is the maximum acceleration the truck driver can allow so
that the box does not slide? In the case where this maximum acceleration is just
exceeded, find the distance the box travels with respect to the truck in the first 1 s of
the motion. Take the coefficient of sliding friction as = 0.2.
