Musical Definitions

Passing Note: A passing note is a note that does not belong to the harmony but connects
two pitches in stepwise movements and usually occurs on the weak beat.

Accented passing note: An accented passing note is the same as a passing note however it
would be played on the strong beat of the bar. Examples of an accented passing note may
be a suspension or appoggiatura.

Anticipation: Anticipation occurs when a note is played before the chord that note belong
to and resolves when we reach that anticipated chord.

Lower Auxiliary note: An auxiliary note is a nonchord tone that


passes stepwise above or below the chord. An lower auxiliary
note is one that passes below the chord.

Echapee: An echapee means escape note. This is an


ornamentation between notes that
is stepwise in which the ornamented
note will go the opposite way of the
progression which is the followed by
the proper note.
