Lesson Title:

Pythagorean What?!:
An Extension of the Math Scavenger Hunt

Grade Level:
8th
Subject:
Math

Description of Learning Goals, Standards, Objectives

CC/GPSs:

National Technology
Standards:

Long-Term Learning
Goal or Outcome:

ABCD Objectives or
Outcomes:

MCC8.G.7 Apply the Pythagorean Theorem to determine unknown side

lengths in right triangles in realworld and mathematical problems in two
and three dimensions.
MCC8.G.6 Explain a proof of the Pythagorean Theorem and its
converse.
Research and information fluency
Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use
information
b. Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and
ethically use information from a variety of sources and
media
Critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making
Students use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct
research, manage projects, solve problems, and make informed
decisions using appropriate digital tools and resources.
This lesson is part two of my scavenger hunt lesson plan. The
scavenger hunt was an introduction to the Pythagorean theorem. After
the introduction, I hope that students will have an understanding of what
the Pythagorean Theorem is, its relevance, and how it applies to reallife scenarios.
Using the knowledge from the Math Scavenger Hunt, the students
will apply the Pythagorean Theorem to determine the lengths of
unknown sides.

Description of Assessment
Assessment Plan:

Upon completion of activity, students will take an interactive quiz on

Kahoot.it. The quiz will ask the questions on the handout, but will also
ask questions that were not on the handout but specifically on the
website. This is so that I will know that the students were not simply
searching for answers, but really reading and understanding the text.

Description of Activities with Technology and Materials

Activity Design:

I will get the students attention by letting them

know that we will be able to use our cell phones,
tablets, and other mobile devices to complete the
activity.

Class starter and lesson connection:

To start the lesson, I will ask engaging questions

about what the students learned from the Math
Scavenger Hunt. If the students do not seem to
understand the objective of the Math Scavenger
Hunt, I will reteach the lesson. However, if
students seem to understand, I will teach this
lesson with the interactive technology.

Teacher and student activities:

I will provide direct instruction by showing the

students how to use Kahoot.it. I will facilitate by
using the smart board. On Kahoot.it, I will have to
click to go to the next question. This will be the
most facilitating I will do.

Technology Connection:

The technology will require students to use

problem-solving skills to answer questions.
Students will work independently, unless students
have to share a mobile device to interact on
Kahoot.it.

Materials and Resources:

Kahoot.it will require the use of cell phones or

any other mobile device. If all students do not
have a mobile device, students will be able to use
class computers or share devices with their
neighbors. Students will also need to use their
Math Scavenger Hunt Worksheet (attached) to
complete the assignment. The Math Scavenger
Hunt assignment is an introduction and will be
used to activate prior knowledge in this
assignment.
