Experiment No.

8 Torsion of Bars
Objective:
To investigate the relationship between torsional moment and angle of twist of a shaft.
Theory:

The shaft is straight and of uniform cross-section throughout its length


The applied torque is constant over its length and acts about the polar axis.
The induced stresses do not exceed the limit of proportionality.
Cross-sectional planes remain plane after strain.

Procedure:

Placed a specimen through the chucks


Set the test length l (say 300mm)
Clamped the specimen
Varied the torsional moment as indicated in the table
Recorded the dial gauge reading for each applied moment
