novel.

Why is it important to understand a character intentions, personality, and flaws


when reading a text?

Every student will be able to: Present a Venn Diagram and a bio poem that
shows their understanding of the assigned chapters, and discuss the assigned

This lesson is designed to help students better understand the assigned
chapters

Materials: reading quiz, discussion questions, Venn Diagram, Bio Poem
layouts
Draw the interaction between Bob and Atticus, with a partner. Use
quotes to explain the language being used, and how Atticus reacted.
Have each pair share their drawing.

- 5 minutes; reading quiz


- 15 minutes; Anticipatory Set: As described above
-20 minutes; Discussion. Have the students discuss the assigned
chapters. The discussion questions can be found under the discussion
questions tab.
- 20 minutes; Have the students complete a bio poem about Grace

Closure
Those actions or statements by a teacher

not closure. Closure is used:
To cue students to the fact that
they have arrived at an important
point in the lesson or the end of a
lesson.

consolidate.

-20 minutes; The students will get into small groups and complete a
Venn Diagram of Tom, Boo, the bug in chapter 22, and a mockingbird.
- 10 minutes; closure activity, described bellow.

For the closure activity the students will share their bio poems with a
partner, and then people will volunteer to share theirs to the class. Each
group will state the one similarity they found in the Venn Diagram.

- Reading Quiz: This will show that the students read and understand
the basic plot events in the chapters assigned.
- Discussion: This will allow student to inquire and dig deeper into the
text, and show their ability to do so.
- Bio Poem: This will show that the students recognize Mrs.
Merriweathers character and how hypocritical she truly is.
- Venn Diagram: This will show that the students know what the

symbols represent in the novel, and how they relate to the essential
characters.
