Belief Statements for Being a Teacher

1. A teacher should be engaging in the classroom. It is one thing to ask questions of right or
wrong, but to actually get the students to ask questions to think deeply and ask further
questions. A relationship between students and teachers is crucial to fostering student
engagement in the classroom.
2. A teacher should be caring. Teaching while in a classroom and only focusing on how the
child learns the curriculum is only part of being a teacher. Caring about a childs personal
life is also essential and could make the difference in their performance. A caring teacher
creates a positive environment which is essential for teaching. This point is back up by
Mazlows Hierarchy of Learning.

3. A teacher must be enthusiastic about their profession. Children can sense if their teacher
enjoys their job and if they are passionate about teaching. This can greatly affect the
student teacher relationship. Enthusiasm about lifelong learning will rub off on the
children if you provide it.

4. A teacher must make the classroom environment inclusive for all students. Each child
deserves to enter an environment that is caring and safe for the students to be fully
engaged in the lesson. Every child is capable of learning, and it is a teachers
responsibility to provide the scaffolding for the success of each and every student.

5. A teacher must be guiding. A teacher is someone who walks with the student on the path
of learning. It is important that the teacher persuade the student to learn and discover for
themselves, to promote independent and student driven learning.

6. A teacher needs to be trusting. Showing ones students that you are trusting is very
necessary. This allows the student to open up and be able to be comfortable with their
teacher in the learning environment. Students will grow personally and academically
when a teacher invests time and energy in them.

7. A teacher must be respectful of their students. If the teacher does not respect the student,
the student will not respect the teacher. Both need to understand each others roles in the
learning environment.

8. A teacher must be honest. For a child to truly succeed, a teacher must be able to be honest
and effective with their student and about their work. Constructive feedback is essential
for students to reach their full academic potential.

9. A teacher must be humble. A teacher must realize that he or she does is not an expert at
everything, and strive to be a lifelong learner. A student may have knowledge on a
subject that they may not. Learning is a two way street, which both a student and teacher
have knowledge to contribute.

10. Finally a teacher must be dedicated. A teachers job is not done when the bell sounds at
three in the afternoon. A teacher must go above and beyond when planning, marking and
providing care for their students. This dedication contributes to a school atmosphere of
success.
