Data Analysis

Throughout the unit I used a few different types of assessments. The pre assessments were not
identical to the post assessment. On the first day of the unit I gave students a little question sheet just
asking them to tell me what they know about the Greek gods, if they could name any, and if they knew
why we learn about the Greek gods and their creation story. There wasnt so much a right answer to
give, but rather information for me to see just how into detail I would need to go. Out of my 3rd period
class, which as 36 students, I was able to get 31 responses. The missing ones were due to absences in
the class. The post assessment given to the class was a unit final exam. The exam consisted of 30
questions. Each question was describing a god or goddess and the student was to fill in on their own
paper the correct answer. On the day of the exam the students were able to get up after finishing their
test and double check answers by looking at their family trees posted around the room, the only catch
was they had to leave their tests at their desk flipped over so no one can see. I made sure this
happened by circling as students went to check their work.
The first assessment was very rough. I mean this in the sense that it was only two questions and
mainly was administered for me to get a feel for what the students knew. Like I said, there were 31
students who gave me their assessments, and with them I was able to see a few things. First thing I
noticed was that a majority of students responded to the first question with only 1 god or goddess (12
students). This told me that either the students were not taking this seriously or they truly didnt know.
I felt that they truly didnt know, but there were definitely a few students that I could tell just didnt
want to answer the questions. Almost
the same number (10 students)
responded with 2 gods or goddesses
that they could name. Six students
were able to give me at least 3 gods,
and only 3 students were able to give

me up to 5. This showed me that my
students really dont know any of the

gods or goddesses besides from what
they have seen in movies. This

information down on my PowerPoints

and helped me focus on what I needed
to for the students.

Responses to Pre Assessment

There were basically two post

assessments given to students. The
first I will describe is the research project and family tree. Students were assigned to research the Greek
creation myth, and be able to retell it by using their family trees they create as a visual aid. Students
were assigned to have 30 gods/goddesses listed on their project, as well as follow the guidelines of the

rubric I created. I graded students based on 4 different categories: Title, Content, Readability, and
Professionalism. Each section was worth a maximum of 8 points, adding up to a total of 32 points.
Students were broken into groups of 5, so we had about 6 groups with a few extra people in some
groups. It was hard to gain a real assessment from the projects considering you couldnt tell really who
contributed what, but that is why I also had a group reflection sheet for them to give me feedback on
who contributed to the group and who didnt. I let students pick their groups, so of course I ended up
with groups of 2 groups of boys, 1 group of girls and 3 other groups of mixed students. One group of
boys, we will call group A, received scores of 26/32 while the group b of girls scored 28/32. Now, having
me know these students I can tell you the group of boys was missing a lot of information because they
didnt follow instructions. The girls group however consisted of some of my top performing students
from the class. The points they missed were minor information slip ups like missing information or false
information.
The exam was a bit different results. As previously stated, the test had 30 questions on it, all
describing a god or goddess that should have been studied while doing research. Students had half a
class period to fill out the 30 questions and turn them into me. The results were as follows:
As you can see most of the
class did very well. There were only a
handful of Bs and a few Cs
and
D/Fs. What I took from this is that
the students can easily name the
Greek gods, but I didnt really get to

looked at the creation myth. I
wanted them to see where the origins
of religion started to come from and

how ideas from Greek society worked
their way all the way up to our society
today. The results form Period 2 was a little different. As you can see there were a few less students in
this class. There were 28 students in this class, one of which dropped the class a few weeks after this
test. Once again there were a lot of students that were able to tell me who the Greek gods and
goddesses were, but this exam didnt really show me how much they knew about the creation myth.

Looking back at the test and the project there are a few things I would have done differently.
After looking at their family tree projects and hearing them tell the creation myth to their peers, I was
able to see who actually did their research. I was able to sit in on a few groups that were telling their
version of the creation story. This was my way of assessing if they gained the right knowledge from the
lesson. If they understood the creation myth than they most likely understood why these people
believed in the gods; to answer the 4 Great Questions. They were not the only society to do this as well,
they were just one of the oldest. I wanted students to see that this is where we start to first see the
belief of multiple gods, and we havent gotten to the point in time where Christianity comes in to play or
Catholicism. I feel like I didnt get to hit the main point of seeing how this idea of a god continues
throughout history, and how it goes from multiple gods, to one god to only one religion and so on. I
think to better teach that idea I would need to have a better structured lesson on why we are looking at
the creation myth. I know that I was a little flustered in teaching this unit seeing as it was my first real
unit I had gotten to completely teach by myself. I also found it extremely difficult in finding fun and
engaging activities for this class considering it isnt my certified subject area. To make up for that I met
with Mr. Wright a lot to talk about what sort of lessons I could do. I felt that because of this I wasnt
able to create real authentic assessments of my classes. Overall this unit went really well but I feel that I
didnt quite get the main points across that I wanted to. Fortunately this unit was at the beginning of
the semester so I had time to get the ideas through in weeks to come.
