Clinical Reflection
Week 3: 4/11/14
This week of clinical I was able to apply the SLO#5, Practice as a member of a
multi-disciplinary health care team. With my patient having a procedure down in the
OR, there were many disciplines involved that I was able to observe as well as be a part
of. I helped prepare the resident before going down to the procedure by making sure a set
of vitals were taken and he was sent down to OR with the proper things needed (chart and
blood pressure cuff which would save the patient from being charged for another).
Through observation, I had the opportunity to see the responsibilities and tasks that all
members of the health care team carry out throughout the transfer process and procedures
as well. I thought it was very intricate how all members are so busy doing their own
thing, yet able to effectively communicate and execute the task smoothly. I also learned
from this that plans will not always go as expected. Initially the patient was going to the
OR at 1130 so plan was to have the patient ready at 11, but upon short notice the patient
was now going down an hour early at 1030.
The second SLO that was applicable this week was SLO#7 deliver family
centered care. The parents of the child are always with the patient and even though they
were divorced, they were very civil and worked out a schedule to have one by their sons
side all the time. It was obvious the dad was a bit tired and at some point overheard the
frustrating conversation when arranging the next few days schedule. Noticing this, I
think its important to be there for the parents as well and allow the time to rest or be with
their child as needed, therefore giving time when they are not bothered and have privacy.
