Category F Explanation

I choose to use example number 2 for this assignment which was to write a
written observation of a child with a description of how I used the
observations as a basis for specific planning for that child.
This specific example I use is for me to first see how much they know when
they come to my room in September. I then do the same exact activities
with them in November to compare what they have learned at conferences,
and then again just before they move up to their new class.
I choose to use this example because it gave me a better idea of where the
childs strengths were, and also what areas I needed to continue working
on with them. In the toddler room we focus heavily on sign language. We
start introducing them to the basic shapes (circle, triangle, square) colors,
and letters, but do not expect them to learn each individual one by the time
they leave our class. Each day at circle time, we go through our sign
language book that we made. The book has seven signs. Hello, Thank
you, more, eat, drink, all done, and good bye. Each sign is on its own
separate page, says what it is and then has a picture of how you sign it.
When we first ask them to sign it when coming to our class, a majority of
them do not know or dont respond. By November, almost each student
can at least sign two of the seven. We then document in their student
portfolio the words they can sign and the date they signed it for us. After a
majority of them learn all the signs, we start adding a new sign. Such as
help, or mom, etc.
In addition to asking them how to sign things, we also make notes of daily
routines. For example we look at feeding, circle time, large/small motor
development, and friends. We like to keep notes every week on the
progress of each skill. Again we do this to help keep track of their progress
but also to help us rule out if a child may have a learning disability or
impairment that may need to be checked into.

Category F Sample
Observation Date: Friday October 24th, 2014
Observation Place: 12-18 month old room at circle time
Time frame: 11-11:15
Emma was being observed at circle time. Not only was she being observed
on what she knew, but I was also observing her behavior and how she
interacted at circle time.
11:00 Start of circle time, Ms. Chrissy starts to sing the Hello Greeting
Song.
11:00- Emma is sitting against the wall next to two other friends. She does
not sing along but waves to the motions of the song.
11:03- Song is over with and Chrissy grabs the sign language book out of
the circle time bin.
11:03- Chrissy starts going through the sign language book with the kids
11:05- Emma pushes her one friend that was sitting next to her away from
Emma
11:05- Ms. Chrissy says, Emma, No thank you, pushing hurts our friends.
Nice touches.
11:06- Chrissy continues the sign language book; Emma doesnt respond
to any of the signs until Chrissy signed the word please. Emma responds
by copying the gesture of please.
11:10- Out of the seven signs, Emma responded by using the gestures to
please and bye bye.
11:10- Sign language book is finished and Chrissy begins to go over colors
by looking at a color book.
11:12 Emma gets up and wanders off to the kitchen
11:12 Emma is told by Chrissy, Emma, come back and read this story with
our friends.
11:13 Emma looks at Chrissy and walks away towards the play kitchen
again.
11:14 two other students get up and join Emma.
11:15 Circle time is over
I feel that Emma is progressing at a normal rate and shows no concerns.
Just in the short ten minutes of circle time, she was able to know it was
circle time and sit against the wall with her friends, responded when

Chrissy told her no thank you, and copied two of the seven gestures.
When first coming into our class in September, she was unable to copy any
of the gestures. Now within two months she was able to pick up two
gestures and can use them throughout the day in context.
Although this isnt the only thing we observe her on, this is what I
specifically observed her on for this assignment and time frame.
