Media and Music Lesson Plan

I.

Essential Question: How do composers use music in media (film,


television, video games, radio) to influence a person?

III.

Standards:
a. National: Listening to, analyzing, and describing
music/Understanding relationships between music, the other arts and
disciplines outside the arts
b. PA: 9.3 Critical Response

IV.

Materials Needed: YouTube (source for TV theme songs), Audio


equipment, Worksheets for all students

V.

Teaching Procedures:
a. Introduce theme of the short lesson (TV Themes)/Pass out worksheet
b. Explain worksheet to students
c. Play first TV theme with no visual
d. Continue through all other themes with the same process
e. Ask students what show they believed to go with each theme
i. Why did they pick this show to go with the music?
f. Now that students are able to match shows to their theme, play a
theme song that does not match to the show.
i. Ask students to flip worksheet over. Student should write
down what they think the concept or theme of the show is and
what musical elements made them think this.
ii. Ask students for their thoughts
iii. Tell students what show the song really belongs to and the
storyline of the show.
g. Point: The themes of television shows get us in a particular mindset
preparing us for what we are to expect and enjoy in the next few
minutes.
h. IF TIME ALLOWS: Have students break into groups of 2-3 people.
Play Manhattan Skyline by David Shire. Ask students to develop a
show concept if this music were going to be the theme.
i. Items for students to consider: Genre of show, time period,
types/roles of characters, the overruling concept of the show
ii. Students should be able to explain why the music made them
pick these ideas

Assessment: The teacher will informally assess students by asking


multiple questions throughout the lesson.
