Lesson Plan #2

ANIMAL COLORS AND SHAPES

1. Objectives to Meet Goals:
Students will understand that animals come in different colors and
shapes
Students will describe the purposes of color for animals
Students will use different colors and shapes to create pictures of animals
Students will create their own animal and describe what shapes and
colors are used
2. Common Core Standard:
Uses viewing skills and strategies to understand and interpret visual
media/ understands the main idea or message in visual media
Understands connections among the various art forms and other
disciplines; Knows how various concepts and principles are used in the
arts and disciplines outside the arts
Understands relationships among organisms and their physical
environment
3. Motivational Techniques:
To set the lesson in motion I will ask the students what their favorite
shape, color, and animal is. We will then watch a short video about animal
colors and shapes. After, we will start our lesson.
4. Materials Needed:
Animal Colors and Shapes video
Crayons
White construction paper
Animal print-outs
Colored construction paper cut into different shapes
Glue
5. Procedure for the Lesson:
We will have a 10 minute discussion about different animals, shapes, and
colors
We will watch the video
I will pass out different print- outs of animals and have the students
discuss the animal and pick out the colors and shapes

Using the different sized construction paper, students will then create the
animal given to them
After the students understand about using the shapes to re-create the
animal, they will create their own unique animal using the shapes
Once they have finished their pictures, volunteers will be asked to share
Pictures will then be hung up around the classroom

6. Academic Language:
Camouflage, colors, purpose, rhomboid, shape
7. Assessment Methods:
When the students are discussing the shapes and colors on the animal
hand out and when they hand in their picture with their unique animal I
will determine the extent to which they attained the core standard and
objective
8. Evaluation of Field Experience/ Students Performance:
Three points: Students were highly engaged in class discussions; were
able to demonstrate a clear understanding of the purposes of color in the
animal world; and correctly used different shapes to create unique and
colorful pictures of animals that clearly identified where the particular
animal lives and accurately portrayed what it looks like.
Two points: Students participated in class discussions; were able to
demonstrate a basic understanding of the purposes of color in the animal
world; and mostly used the correct shapes to create somewhat unique
and colorful pictures of animals that vaguely identified where the
particular animal lives and generally portrayed what it looks like.
One point: Students participated minimally in class discussions; were
unable to demonstrate a basic understanding of the purposes of color in
the animal world; and created incomplete pictures that did not clearly
identify a particular animal and demonstrated a lack of understanding
about what shapes might identify the animal they had attempted to
create.
