REFLECTIVE SUMMARY REPORT

Standard #3 Learning Environments

The teacher works with others to create environments that support individual and collaborative
learning, and that encourage positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and selfmotivation.

Name of Artifact: Reflective Summary Report

Date: December 1st, 2014
Course: Education 101

Brief Description: This Reflective Summary will explain what I have learned, things I have
seen, and what strategies I will use and not use in my class in the near future.

Rationale: To document my understanding of Standard #3, Learning environments, I

documented my understanding of the importance of being encouraging and positive in order to
be an effective teacher. Its important to be accepting and flexible because you will have to use
many different learning environments. I also explained the importance of my students being able
to take the skills/knowledge learned inside the classroom and use it outside the classroom.

Introduction
In this paper I will explain my experiences about teaching styles, students behavior, and
the different classrooms we used for gym and health. While doing this I will also incorporate
InTASC standard #3.
Relate Service Learning Experience to the Classroom
When I started helping in the class, the students were working on a group project about
communicable diseases. They had to come up with ways to stop different types of diseases by
listing the disease, whether it was viral, bacterial, fungi, or protozoa. Then list different ways to
prevent it, and then different ways from spreading it. The project was very engaging for the
students and enjoyable to watch the students learn something new.
Koch (2012) stated the following:
Project-based learning adds creativity and depth to a curriculum, promoting more
meaningful learning than rote memorization or worksheet activities. Projects can be designed for
any subject area, and they often embrace concepts from several disciplines. They also
accommodate students with work from their own strengths.(p.117)
Personal Reflections
Based on the Health classes I attended, I really liked how students wanted to be more
knowledgeable about their health and wanted to learn more by doing group projects and/or
classroom game competitions. The learning and engagement was phenomenal and really exciting
for a teacher because it showed how much the students and teacher both enjoyed having class by
teaching and learning.

Future Teacher

During my experience with both gym and health classes I really like how most kids were
not afraid to learn something new and show true interest in both. When Im a teacher is starting
out I will begin by being strict and then slowly loosen up with students after they know my
expectations I have for them each class. One thing a teacher should want is for the students to
have fun, but in a safe respectable manner. I will always do whatever it takes to involve all
students in class.

Summary and Recommendations

My experience in my service learning was great, but I think some or most adults would
benefit more by doing different 3-4 different grade levels. Meaning one elementary, one middle
school, one high school. Because everyone thinks they know what grade they want to teach until
they teach it. They like one grade level, but love another without giving it a chance. All Im
really trying to say is make everyone try each different type of school levels so they really know
where their true love or grade is.
