Brief Autobiography: After having taught martial arts at my own martial arts
school in North Vancouver, B.C. for almost fifteen years, an unfortunate accident
left me unable to continue in the martial arts, but my desire to teach and guide
young minds remained just as strong, if not stronger. Falling back on my Studio
Art and Drama diplomas, I enrolled at the University of Lethbridges Education
program to become a teacher. Teaching is my true passion, and I feel my
incredibly diverse, real-world experience makes me uniquely adaptable and
qualified to be an excellent teacher. I am bold and confident, easily able to speak
in front of groups of people and usually the first to volunteer for things. I feel my
biggest strength is my ability and desire to learn quickly and apply what I have
learned.
Brief Description of School and Class Organization, Seating Plan(s) (if
used): Hill Spring School is a small school, nestled into the foothills of the
mountains. The community is quiet and friendly. At the grade 6 level, there is a
very large influx of students from the Blood Reservation, which dramatically shifts
the dynamic of the school as two very different cultures come together in a close
space. The teachers, to their immense credit, go out of their way to help their
students and make sure they have every advantage learning can provide, overcoming any obstacles put before them. They have been an absolute inspiration in
my early school career. The classes are organized in varied patterns, depending
on the classroom. In Mr. Bennetts for example, he has tables, with wither 2 or 3
students to a table, depending on class and grade. Mrs. Beazers class has
traditional desks in rows. The Phys. Ed. Classes I teach start with students lining
up in the hallway, then heading into the gym to keep students organized and
focused. Its a very smart system. I have the opportunity to work with every grade
level in the school, and because of that (and combined with the fact that the
teachers have a policy of changing the seating plan monthly) I have left the
seating plans out.
Timetable: The timetable is provided on a separate page.
How I Felt: Caught a little off-guard. Was told I wouldnt be teaching this
class.
What Went Well: Came up with a lesson on the spot that was wellreceived.
What Went Poorly: Should have had something planned any way.
Improvement Plan: Always have something prepped.
How I Felt: Still struggling with math. Feel there is a communication barrier
between me and students. Need to adjust thinking as well as language.
What Went Well: Students work hard and are doing their best to figure
everything out.
What Went Poorly: As above, need to change communication.
Improvement Plan: Simplify instructions in addition to language.
How I Felt: A little nervous. Big influx of new students, half of whom dont
really want to be here.
What Went Well: Even those that didnt want to be here were working on
lesson.
What Went Poorly: 3 boys at back were barely involved. Tricky situation to
get them working and moving.
Improvement Plan: Go back to basic figure work and cartoons to give
students more tools to make comic panels with.
Missed Thursday, November 13th, 2014 and Friday November 14th, 2014 due
to Father in hospital.
How I Felt: First official class with the worst class the school has ever
had. Was worried they would eat me alive.
What Went Well: They needed a lot of time to settle down, but once they
did they were actually working.
What Went Poorly: A LOT of time on focus and classroom management.
Improvement Plan: Establish rules quickly and firmly; dont give students
any slack.
How I Felt: Students lost it in this class. Science, social, then science
again in a different room put students off game.
What Went Well: Still got through bulk of lesson.
What Went Poorly: Had to give the students the talk after having just
given rules to them an hour and half before.
Improvement Plan: Continually explain and enforce the rules.
How I Felt: Expected the worst from the students based on day before.
What Went Well: Students surprised me and listened well and worked
hard.
What Went Poorly: Had I not had a double period, I would have run out of
material.
Improvement Plan: Have a back-up lesson in case material runs short.
How I Felt: Class was really hyped up and struggled with class
management. A first for these kids.
What Went Well: Students worked through material quickly, too quickly in
some cases.
What Went Poorly: Didnt demonstrate teaching skills to UC. Students got
through assignment too fast, which put off timing for rest of class.
Improvement Plan: More review at beginning of class.
How I Felt: I felt ready for the lesson, and almost ready for the behavior
issues.
What Went Well: Got through material in double-period.
How I Felt: Good; this is a great group of kids that make even difficult
subjects easy to work on.
What Went Well: Review was well received and activities seemed to hold
interest.
What Went Poorly: I think I give these kids too much slack due to them
being so well behaved. I should strengthen my boundaries.
Improvement Plan: Re-establish classroom rules and enforce them.
How I Felt: First time with 6-7s, including a lot of students who have no
interest in art. Laptop had died just before math so couldnt do
presentation.
What Went Well: Everyone was working and listening. And for this class, it
was pretty quiet.
What Went Poorly: Very hard to motivate the students who didnt want to
be there.
Improvement Plan: Like with grade 8-9, go back to basic figure and
shapes to flesh out the amount of stick figures present in comic strips.
How I Felt: Mondays with this group are a mixed bag. Plus they are
expecting a new student mid-stream, which is going to disrupt and already
off-kilter class.
What Went Well: Videos and presentations are keeping students mostly
focused (for this class anyways)
What Went Poorly: Still struggling with constant behavior work. Its tiring
and a little discouraging.
Improvement Plan: I cant give up on them, or on the discipline, so being
vigilant about discipline continues to be the focus. Always trying new ways
to keep them on task.
How I Felt: Students are ready and willing to learn, so I enjoy this class
quite a bit.
What Went Well: Material still going over well. Students capable of
discussion about subject with decent insights.
What Went Poorly: Problem student in class seems to be having a bad
week, and is really acting out.
Improvement Plan: Keep on him, and make sure I have back-up activities
for students while I handle behavior problems.
How I Felt: Still working on discipline. Still kind of dread teaching this
class.
What Went Well: New students arrival hasnt had a giant impact on class.
What Went Poorly: Non-readers in class didnt enjoy reading portion of
assignment.
Improvement Plan: More videos for the non-readers.
How I Felt: Great group again. I enjoy not having to constantly worry about
discipline problems.
What Went Well: Class went quickly and the students were engaged all
the time.
What Went Poorly: Unfit students still struggle to keep up, not sure how to
get them to safely increase their efforts.
Improvement Plan: Find new activities that allow different effort levels and
still stay on task.
How I felt: Prepared and ready. I have a decent idea about the
performance level of this group.
What Went Well: Students worked quietly all class and even the students
who didnt want to be there worked without prompting.
What Went Poorly: Still a lot of lazy artists in the class who are
convinced they cant do better and dont try to put in the extra effort
needed to improve.
Improvement Plan: Next class allow more freedom in what the students
draw.
How I felt: Behavior has taken a backslide as the students adjust to the
new student in class.
What Went Well: Timing of lesson and bells was bang on. Thats a good
start to the thing I struggle with the most overall.
What Went Poorly: Still way too much behavior work. Though even though
I feel like Im not getting through, marking their quiz showed that everyone
seems to be getting the material.
Improvement Plan: Hmmm stay the course. I have a feeling this
behavior problem is going to get worse before it gets better.
How I felt: Mixed bag. Huge meltdown from problem student, but rest of
class worked well and was on task.
What Went Well: Posters were good for grade level and time given.
What Went Poorly: Students understood the math, but explained it poorly
in presentations.
Improvement Plan: Problem student simply cannot work with others.
Misunderstand every single social cue and melts down because of it.
How I felt: Was only told yesterday Id be taking over this class. Wasnt
overly worried though because the 8-9s are good kids.
What Went Well: Students got to work right away on 4 on 4 and played
well with minimal supervision needed (though still there).
What Went Poorly: A few students (strangely the same problem students
in my art classes) barely participated in basketball games. Other students
largely ignored their lack of interest and effort, but it was difficult to get
them to do anything.
Improvement Plan: Even though I wont have to teach this class again, if I
were to, Id get those non-motivated students to do alternate jobs for
games (referee, for example). Something less physical but keeping them
involved.
How I felt: Ready to pull my hair out. New student is getting more
comfortable in school and is now acting out more than the rest of them.
What Went Well: Students did well on quiz again.
What Went Poorly: All this time on behavior has put behind my planners. I
had the timing for this class down better than any other, but this behavior
back slide has set everything back.
Improvement Plan: Less time on the fun final project I had planned and
more time on going through terms and concepts. Not that Im punishing
them, but I need them to get the basics before I can give them any sort of
creative freedom.
How I felt: Problem student continued his outbursts in this class. Im very
concerned that something has set him off outside of school for him to
behave this poorly.
What Went Well: Really got to work on teamwork in this class.
What Went Poorly: I had to sit the students down and give them the talk
because their teamwork was only extending as far as their social cliques.
Improvement Plan: Continue to emphasize the importance of working with
others, even (and especially) if they arent in your circle of friends.
How I felt: This class was so much fun. Several of the grade 9s came in to
help out, and I made them group leaders, which the other kids LOVED.
What Went Well: The grade 9s really stepped up as leaders and the little
kids were so enthralled to be playing with the big kids.
What Went Poorly: A couple of non-participant kids (I wasnt able to get
the full story on them; I was just told they werent participating)
Improvement Plan: Id like to do classes like this more often; leadership by
the grade 9s is a great skill for them and it really brings the school
together.
No classes Friday, November 28th, 2014. PLC day. Ended up unable to go due
to poor road conditions. Unsure if event was cancelled or not. Will find out
Monday.
*Note for this coming week: There will be no Phys. Ed. Classes as the whole
school will be using afternoons for practice for their Christmas recital. MY role will
shift from on-again, off-again teacher to assistant, since I wont be able to be
there for the entire rehearsal and performance.
How I felt: Review went great, kids really got the concept. Every member
of the class contributed to conversation.
What Went Well: Review went well, independent work was quiet and
focused.
What Went Poorly: Could have stretched the kids more in the learning. I
stuck with a lot of safe bets to make sure the slow kids in the class could
keep up.
Improvement Plan: Get independent work started quickly to spend more
time with problem students on level-based material.
How I felt: My class was largely wasted on a group that had no desire to
learn.
What Went Well: There were a few students that actually tried to do the
assignment.
What Went Poorly: Almost exclusively off-topic conversation, minimal
effort and a great resistance to the ideas presented. All the discipline
problems I have with these kids in Science are intensified in this class,
especially after their SNIB class. I feel that focusing exclusively on
discipline defeats the point of art classes, where there should be freedom.
Improvement Plan: More structured exercise with less freedom to goof
off. Something that has a definite product and allows for little slacking off.
What Went Well: After maintaining discipline for the first half of class, the
students were more focused to get through the material.
What Went Poorly: All this time on behavior has put behind my planners. I
had the timing for this class down better than any other, but this behavior
back slide has set everything back. (This is the same thing as last entry,
but it still applies)
Improvement Plan: Less time on the fun final project I had planned and
more time on going through terms and concepts. Not that Im punishing
them, but I need them to get the basics before I can give them any sort of
creative freedom. (This also still applies.)
How I felt: Class was structured and organized. Things went well.
What Went Well: Students got a lot done and kept on task with little
prompting.
What Went Poorly: Not the most exciting of classes, but things needed to
get done.
Improvement Plan: Try to find a way to make book work more exciting.
Difficult to do since they are all working on separate levels, but some kind
of race or something.
How I felt: Good and prepared. Plus the kids were ready and willing to
learn.
What Went Well: Got a lot done again today. The kids are really good at
keeping on task and working.
What Went Poorly: Again, Id have to say a lack of variety in tasks, but its
important that they get these work sheets done before the holiday break.
Improvement Plan: Striking a balance between getting necessary
assessment done (the green books) and new exciting activities.
I did not make it to the School on Thursday, December 4th, 2014 due to hitting a
deer on the way to the school that morning.
How I felt: Big review, worried the students wouldnt get it.
What Went Well: We got through all the material.
What Went Poorly: Almost zero effort on the quiz from the trouble-maker
students.
Improvement Plan: Not sure; I basically gave them the information and
they still dogged it. Keep trying new things until I find something that
motivates them.
How I felt: Doomed? Seriously though, I just braced for the worst, since it
was the problem group.
What Went Well: The students who were paying attention got the lesson
quickly and finished on time, including two of the students who was
frequently a problem student.
What Went Poorly: The noise level was constantly out of control, and the
other problem students were up to their usually shenanigans.
Improvement Plan: Real hard problem to balance; I cant give one on one
attention without letting the behavior get out of control, and I cant let the
behavior slip, which means less one on one.
There was no Science class to teach today, as the grade 6-7s went to a skating
event.
Final comments: As Im sure you can see by the entries, and if you read my postclass reflections on my class planners, I had a lot of difficulty with the grade 6
class. Every teacher in the school said they were the worst class the school has
had in their 25 year history (lucky me!), and with the mid-season inclusion of a
new student, the hormonal-driven posturing was at an all-time high. That said, I
had some great moments from them, and in my own way, I will miss them. I feel
like it was difficult to truly assess these students, as it was cool for them to
deliberately not finish assignments and to be as disruptive as possible in class.
They would go out of their way to not learn. This made a straight-up assessment
of their abilities almost impossible, so I ended up having to read between the
lines quite a bit, and extrapolate what I saw they were capable of contrasted by
what I was seeing from them into a sort of Are they at least moving forward?
The grade 4-5s were the diametric opposite to the 6s, and with the exception of
one student with crippling emotional and social problems, were a delight to deal
with. They listened attentively, they participated and it gave me the freedom to do
more out-of-the-box learning with them, something I simply couldnt do with the
grade 6s for fear of disaster. As a result, it was much easier to assess the grade
4-5s, as I got to spend one on one time with them, got multiple formative and
summative assessment pieces from them, and really got to see them learn and
grow. As a result, I have a grading sheet for the grade 4-5s that is much more indepth then with the grade 6s. It is full of notes about their progress, and has a
much more informed view of their learning. By contrast, the grade 6 grading
sheet is pretty bare bones, because I dont feel it is fair to grade the students on
potential when they arent living up to it (and in fact doing the exact opposite).
Therefore I felt it was not fair to put formative assessments in place, because
almost the entire class would be Completely capable of doing the work (minus
the 2 non-readers and the 4 barely-readers) but is not applying themselves at
all. There would literally be one exception to that blanket assessment, and it
would stand out so sorely as to look like I was playing favorites. Which couldnt
be farther from the truth. 2 of my favorite students were two of the lowest
performing students in the class, and I put in the extra time and attention keeping
them on task and helping them read (in one of their cases) because I knew they
were capable of succeeding. Im not 100% sure what to write after this. I feel like
I have been told to write quite a lot in PS1, and it seems like I have been given
freedom to write what I think and feel, only to be told after the fact that is not what
was expected, so Im a bit at odds with what to conclude here. I guess Ill try to
sum up what I have learned, because thats the most important thing to me:
1. Its more important to create good learners than it is to teach information.
2. High-functioning students will disappoint you and low-functioning students
will surprise you, so be ready for anything.
3. No strategy survives the battlefield, and neither do lesson planners.
4. 6 weeks is way too short. I was just starting to get in the groove and its
over.
5. My idea of discipline from the martial arts, and the actual discipline of a
classroom are two wildly different things.
6. Always have a backup plan. Laptops will crash, deers will try to drive your
car.
