word and distinguishing that the beginning word is the only difference for a rhyming
word
Students will be able to count out syllables

Evaluation of Student Learning:

Oral evaluations will be given; at the end of the lesson, each student should be able to
tell me at least two words that rhyme and clap out the syllables that are in the rhyming
words

Connections:
PastThe day before, we will read two books: Green Eggs and Ham; and One Fish, Two Fish:
Red Fish, Blue Fish (both by Dr. Seuss); I will ask students if they found any words in
the story that sounded alike; the words that they identify will be written on the board for
the next lesson
*Differentiated Instruction & Integration of Technology*- We will also watch the
two stories on YouTube with the subtitles for the visually impaired to see and the

hearing impaired to read; the video will also be beneficial for behavioral students who
have a hard time sitting still during reading time
PresentSyllable Graph: Reread the two books and review words from previous day; As an
entire class, we will make a syllable chart using our first names; Make rhyming rings
individually
FutureMake Miss Mc Daniels Kindergarten Rhyming book (a book incorporating rhymes by all
of the students)

Motivational Strategy/Anticipatory Set for Lesson:

Have students come to circle mat; have picture flashcards on the board; ask students if
they could match they rhyming words together, somewhat like a game and then move
right into the lesson
Content:
After reading the book, we will go over the rhyming words that we found. Next, we will
clap out the syllables of the rhyming words. After that, I will get my name chart out and
one by one, each child will come to me while the rest of the class claps out their name.
Once they figure out how many syllables they have in their name, they will put it under
the number on the graph. The entire class will have a chance to put their name on the
graph and at the end of the class, I will publish our graph outside of our classroom. After
that activity, we will move to our rhyming rings. Each student will get a keychain and a
sheet with rhyming words. The students will color each word and picture and I will
laminate and hole punch their key rings to take home and practice. One students are
finished, they can take turns on ABCmouse.com practicing rhyming and syllables.
