Law of Conservation of Mass Lab
Part A Mass and phase changes
Purpose: To determine what happens to the mass of water during melting.
Hypothesis: _____________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________
Materials: 100 mL beaker
balance

ice
hot plate

Procedure: 1) Place the ice in the beaker and mass the two together.
2) Place the beaker on the hot plate (setting of 5) and gently heat until the
ice melts.
Results: create a data table to show your results

Questions:
1) Was this a physical or chemical change? Explain your answer.
________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________
2) What were the reactant(s) in this change? ____________________________________

3) What were the product(s) in this change? ____________________________________

4) Was your hypothesis confirmed? If not, explain possible sources of error in your
procedure.

Part B Mass and formation of a solution
Purpose: To determine what happens to the mass when a salt water solution is formed.
Hypothesis: _____________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________
Materials: 100 mL beaker
balance

salt in an aluminum dish

stirring rod

Procedure: 1) Measure 40 ml of tap water in a graduated cylinder and pour it into your
beaker.
2) Place the beaker and the aluminum dish (with salt in it) on the balance
and determine the mass.
3) Add the salt to the water in the beaker and stir to dissolve.
4) Mass the beaker with the salt water solution and the empty aluminum
dish on the balance.
Results: Create a data table to show your results.

Part C --- Mass and a chemical reaction

Purpose: to determine what happens to the mass when an antacid tablet is added to water
Hypothesis: _____________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________
Materials: plastic bottle with cap
Balance

- 1/3 antacid tablet

aluminum dish

Procedure: 1) Fill the plastic bottle about full of water and seal with the cap.
2) Mass the plastic bottle and the antacid tablet in the aluminum dish.
3) Add the antacid tablet to the water in the bottle and quickly seal the bottle
with the cap.
4) When the fizzing stops, mass the bottle and the aluminum dish.
