10/23/14 Lesson Reflection

This week Lisa allowed me to teach. I created a lesson plan and taught the lesson for both first
and third periods. It was a lot of fun to finally plan a lesson of my own and put it into action in an actual
classroom. This lesson covered new material involving students being able to evaluate and create Lewis
Dot Structures. Lewis Dot Structures allow students to provide visual representation of the type of
bonding that is occurring between atoms in a molecule. This was new material for the students, but it
built upon material that had been discussed previously.
My first period was definitely the guinea pig. My pacing was off, and I barely finished what
needed to be done before the bell rung. They will definitely have questions on Monday for Lisa. For third
period, the lesson went exactly as planned, with some tweaking and feedback from Lisa after I had
completed first period. I had time for my ticket out the door which served as my formal assessment for
the days lesson. The feedback from the kids was very helpful and I know what should be addressed
again before moving on o the next topic on Monday. I know that I will get better at timing, but that was
the biggest issue for me on Thursday. I do feel a little guilty that first period did not get the same quality
of lesson as third period because of the rush in time. I am hoping timing will get better with more
practice and a routine of my own.
I was given feedback that I need to wait for all eyes to be up front. This is challenging me
sometimes, because I am also worried about my timing. I feel this will be easier in a class room of my
own, because I will have set my own expectations and routines for my classroom management. Trying to
reinforce expectations that I did not set is difficult at times. I was given feedback that I needed more pre

and post assessments throughout material. This can be done and worked on, as this is a very important
part of checking for understanding throughout the introduction of material.
For my first evaluated and observed lesson, I do think that it went well. I have things to work on
and I will be taking all of the feedback given to help me continue to write lessons and engaging activities
for my students.
