Project Management:

In-Service for Pain

Distraction Kit

Project Overview
The project implemented and organized for the Interventional
Radiology department was an educational in-service to teach
how to use distraction, as a tool to manage pain. Caregivers,
doctors, nurses and radiology technologists will be able to use
the distraction kit with patients of all ages and developmental
levels when they receive a potentially painful test or needle
poke. This type of proposal has been studied and according to
MacLaren et al. Pain is a common and potentially debilitating
condition. Although several effective and developmentally
appropriate cognitive-behavioral techniques for pain
management exist, results of curriculum evaluations and
knowledge surveys reveal a lack of awareness of these
strategies in health care professionals. As a result, the
development and evaluation of pain management training
programs is an important endeavor (2008, p. 358). This study
supported the need to train the staff in IR on distraction.

Project Goals and Objectives

O

Provide education and resources

regarding the success of distraction
techniques in research.
O
O

Create distraction kit that is appropriate

to use on a wide range of ages.
Create a resource flash drive for future
reference.

Create assessment surveys to be

used before and after the educational
in-service.
O

Assess the knowledge base that IR

nurses and radiology technicians have
regarding pain management using
distraction.

Educate, Nurses and Radiology

Technicians, about how to use distraction kit
during painful or anxiety producing tests.
Improve IR patients experience and
implemented care.
O IR patients are vulnerable and many
require multiple tests which expose
them frequent potentially painful stimuli.
Over time needle phobia occurs.
Needle phobia is a formal medical
condition affecting approximately 10%
of the world population and
characterized within the American
Psychiatric Association Diagnostics and
Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
(DSM-IV) by the presence of fear and
the occurrence of avoidance behavior(
Sokolowski, Giovannitti, Boynes, 2010).

Goal

To develop an in-service to educate the

nursing and radiology technician staff
about the use of distraction as a tool to
reduce pain and anxiety for patients
who are receiving a potentially painful
or anxiety producing procedure.

To improve the quality of the care

delivered and reduce the psychological
impact that pain or anxiety can cause in
the healthcare setting.

Focus

Focus on the use of tools and toys and

age appropriate tactics to deliver
distraction.
