5 Moral Issues:

a) Bystanders in bullying incidences: should I say something to an adult?

b) Honesty when it comes to fairness (with regard to sharing toys)
c) Should I tell my teacher when I know another student is lying to her?
d) Do I have to play with that person even though I do not want to?
e) I lost my own pencil so I took my friends without asking because I know she wont be mad.
All of the above moral issues have actually come up in the kindergarten classes that I completed
my practicum in, as well as the class I am currently volunteering in.
The one I will choose to focus on is being a bystander when you see someone getting bullied.
This task will be for primary students. This will be in the subject of Health.
Seeing:
Help students understand the importance of recognizing inappropriate behaviours because it puts
others at risk for harm. Their decision to speak up to a trusted adult, will allow them to help the
victims.
Judging:
Allow students to understand the problem from all perspectives. By not doing anything, someone
will be harmed. By stepping in, they could be harmed. By seeking a trusted adult, such as a
teacher, they are considering the least harmful approach and therefore the most loving one.
Acting:
Deciding to take action and speak up regarding the issue. It is important for students to
understand that they need to implement actions in order for results to occur, and this would be
crucial when reporting an incident of bullying.
Evaluating:
Have students reflect on their actions and understand the problem from various perspectives. We
do not want to point fingers at a bad or good person, but rather discuss how everyone can
improve and learn from mistakes of the past. This will strengthen our relationship with God, as
well as create an environment free of harm and bullying.
Curriculum Objective Grade One:

C2.3 demonstrate the ability to recognize caring behaviours (e.g., listening with respect, giving
positive reinforcement, being helpful) and exploitive behaviours (e.g., inappropriate touching,
verbal or physical abuse, bullying), and describe the feelings associated with each.
Teacher prompt: In Fully Alive, we talked about how each one of us is special and that God
cares for us. We also talked about our bodies being special. How do we show that we respect our
bodies?
Students: We show that we respect our bodies by taking care of them, by keeping the private
parts of our bodies covered and respecting other peoples privacy.
Correlates to the virtues: Prudence, Justice, Temperance (Restraint), Fortitude (Courage), Faith,
Hope, and Love
In the primary grades, students are building the foundation of respect and learning about positive
interactions with their peers. It is crucial that they are able to recognize inappropriate and
appropriate behaviours in order to decipher when to stand by and when to act.
