Anchor Chain Stud Repairs

Please be informed that in principal Class allow for loose studs in anchor chains as
follows:
General.
For studs links, loose studs may be accepted as long as there is no danger of studs
falling out. If studs have been lost or may fall out, that length of chain is to be
rejected as worn out.
Repair procedure for loose studs:

An approved welding procedure for the chain in question is required.

The studs are to be welded at one end only, i.e. opposite to the weldment of the
link, and completely around the circumference.

The stud ends must fit the inside of the link, with appropriate gap.

Only loose studs may be considered for welding. Lost studs are not to be replaced
and that length of chain is to be renewed.

Stud and link shall be cleaned/ground before welding. Random magnetic particle
inspection to check that links are free from cracks is recommended before welding and
after heat treatment.
