Assignment 4
1. A system consists of mass m1, homogeneous cylinder (with mass m2 and radius r) and spring
(with spring constant k) as shown in Figure A4-1. With respect to the base, the mass is
sliding without friction and the cylinder is rolling without slipping.

a. Derive equations of motion of the system in using force-acceleration method.
b. For m1 = m2 = m, determine the system natural frequencies.
c. Determine and sketch the mode shapes relating to their natural frequencies.
2. A system consists of block mass m1, homogeneous cylinder (with mass m2 and radius r) and
springs (with spring constant k1 and k2) as shown in Figure A4-2. With respect to the base,
the mass is sliding without friction and the cylinder is rolling without slipping on the block.
