Raft Card 1: Kindergarten Science (Introduction to Senses)-At Grade Level

Row 1
Objective: Use a drawing to introduce students to 5 senses and the body parts we use, as well as why we
need them.
Student Role: An alien from outer space
Audience: Teacher and peer group
Format: Verbally, report back to other aliens on how we use our senses here on Earth. (a puppet show)
Topic: What are the 5 senses and the body parts we use, as well as why we need them.

Directions: Prior to lesson teacher will need an interactive white board, a picture of a person without
body parts for senses, Computer with internet access, alien puppet, Handouts of Five Senses Worksheet.
1.
Using an interactive white board or projector, have a picture of a person without ears, eyes,
mouth, nose and hands.
2.

Ask students to think about what is missing from the picture.

3.
Ask question, How does this person see? This should prompt students to say, With eyes.
Ask, Where are they? This should get students to think about what else is missing from the person.
Draw on picture.
4.

Ask students what they use their eyes for.

5.
Follow the same steps for the mouth, ears, hands and nose until all body parts for five senses
are drawn on the picture.
6.
Explain to students that tasting, hearing, smelling, feeling and seeing are all the five senses. We
must use our senses to learn about the world.

Objective: Discovering our five senses, enjoying popcorn, and illustrating what we learned about our five
senses and how they are used.
Student Role:

Artist

Audience: Teacher and peer group.

Format: Observation, Discussion and create a brochure using art application on computer about the five
senses used while creating popcorn with butter. (See and hear popcorn pop and butter melt. Taste,
touch and smell popcorn with butter. Discuss the five senses and how they are used and create a
booklet about the five senses. Please note: Teachers Role: Handle electric popcorn popping machine
(not microwave popcorn), melting butter in pot. After popcorn is popped teacher pours butter over
popcorn and passes out to students.)
Topic: How to use popcorn and butter while stimulating the five senses.

Directions: Prior to beginning lesson teacher needs the following for lesson:
Vocabulary: senses, observation, sight, sound, taste, touch, smell, feel
Materials: Air popcorn popper, large bowl, popcorn, salt, butter, pan (and a way to melt butter), napkins
for each student and a computer with internet access.

While popcorn is popping discuss what senses students are using while it is cooking (sight, smell,
hear).

After popcorn is passed out discuss what senses students are using now (sight, smell, hear, feel,
taste).
5.
Have students use their technological time using the computer art application to create a
brochure about the five senses used while creating popcorn with butter.

Assessment:
Prepare a 5 senses booklet with the art program about what we learned using our senses to make
buttered popcorn. The booklet must have a cover page and one page for each sense. Clipart may be
used. You will receive a total of 10 points for each of the following: making a cover, creating a page for
each sense (5 pages), and using the art application on the computer to create your booklet (Total of 60
points).
