Assessment(s) of the Objectives:

Lesson Objective(s)

Assessment(s) of the
Objective(s)

Use of Formative
Assessment

Language Arts Objective:

Students will be able to
identify a verb and provide
their own examples.

The teacher will look to see

which students understand
the meaning of a verb and
their ability to choose the
verb(s) in a sentence. An
exit-slip will be used as a
post-assessment.
The teacher will determine if
students collaborate and
express themselves
effectively among their
groups and the class as a
whole.

Assessment data will be

used to instruct further
instruction by
determining if the
students need more
examples of verbs to
help them understand
the concept. It will also
be used to help the
teacher decide if he/she
needs to review social
skills and selfexpression.

Speaking Objective:
Students will be able to
engage in an effective
discussion with their
classmates.

Accommodations:
If the teachers notice that students are having difficulty understanding what a verb is, he/she will provide
more explicit examples and further instruction. The lesson will take as much time as needed in order for the
students to have full understanding of the concept. The Four Corners activity can be modified to having only
two choices (agree and disagree), if students seem to be having difficulty with deciding between the original
four options. Students who may not be able to physically move can point to the word that corresponds with
their decision.
Materials: Verbs video, Promethean Board, four sheets construction paper labeled with the words Agree,
Strongly Agree, Disagree, and Strongly Disagree, exit-slips, pencil, and paper.
Procedures:
1. The lesson will be introduced by having the students watch a video that provides examples of verbs
and how they are used. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqsDKIheaek)
2. The teacher will demonstrate several examples of verbs by performing the action words. The words
that will be demonstrated are wave, talk, jump, skip, and walk.
3. After the teacher demonstrates each verbs action, he/she will have the students do the actions with
him/her in an orderly fashion.
4. The students will be asked to give one or two more examples of verbs that they can perform near their
desks (twirl, spin, laugh, drop etc.).

5. Next, the students will be instructed to move to the middle of the classroom. A sentence will be
displayed on the board and it will contain at least one verb. The students have to decide if they agree,
strongly agree, disagree, or strongly disagree with the statement. These sentences will allow the
teacher to get to know his/her students better. They will move to the corner of the room that displays
their decision between the four; the teacher will demonstrate how he/she expects them to move to
their corresponding spot in the classroom (walking quietly). The teacher will also demonstrate how
they should NOT move to each corner. After they have moved, the students will have to discuss with
their group who agreed or disagreed with them which words are verbs in each sentence. They will
have to explain why they believe those words are verbs. The sentences will be:
My favorite type of candy to eat is chocolate.
I love Halloween the most of all holidays.
I prefer to play video games than outdoors.
I like to ride my bike.
6. After all students return to their desks, the teacher will have them complete a simple five-problem
exit-slip where they will have to circle the word that is the verb in each problem. The teacher should
read each word for each problem aloud to the class as a whole. Here are the problems (with the
correct answer in bold):
1. Dog Rodeo Pretty Run
2. Truck Drop Story Idea
3. Walk Clue Pizza Fan
4. Small Card Twirl Water
5. Look Dock Pig Necklace

Activity Analysis:
The class will physically demonstrate actions of verbs when the teacher does it.
The speaking strategy Four Corners will be used in this lesson in order to give the students the
opportunity to speak out to the class.
The scaffolding instructional strategy will be used throughout the entire lesson in order to build the
students knowledge.
Students will be physically moving throughout most of the lesson, which will keep them alert.
The Promethean Board will be used as a tool for showing a video that introduces verbs.
