Purpose and Lesson

Standard(s):
Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills
111.26.7A: The student is expected
to generate equivalent numerical
expressions using order of
operations, including whole number
exponents and prime factorization.
116.22.3B: The student is expected
to participate in moderate to
vigorous health-related physical
activities on a regular basis.
116.22.7E: The student is expected
to accept successes and
performance limitations of self and
others, exhibit appropriate behavior
responses, and recognize that
improvement is possible with
appropriate practice.

Understanding goals(s):
Students will understand how to
create an expression to describe a
situation.
Students will understand how to
evaluate expressions using order of
operations.

Essential Question(s):
What is the process for writing
expressions?
How are expressions useful in
everyday life?

Students will understand sitting up

straight will promote good posture
and benefit their body.
During group competitions students
will show good sportsmanship and
understand study and practice will
improve their skills.

Student
Objectives:
Given a word
problem or table,
students can
generate an
expression at 90%
accuracy.
Given an
expression or using
an expression they
created, students
can use order of
operations to
evaluate
expressions at 90%
accuracy.
Sitting at their
desks, students will
sit up straight for
an interval of 10

Assessment of
Objectives:
How will you know if
students have met the
objectives
(formal/informal)?
Students will
participate in group
competition on a
kahoot quiz over
evaluating
expressions.
The teacher will
observe student
posture throughout the
lesson.
The teacher will
observe student
behavior during the
kahoot quiz.

grouping
Anticipatory Set:(5 min, whole class)
Students who remember the song will sing the Order of Operations
song.
Input and Modeling:(15 min, whole class)
Students will be given monopoly money to model problem 1-4 on
page 136.
The teacher will facilitate a discussion asking students what they
think the word means for variable, coefficient, and algebraic
expression. After students predict the definition, we will break
down the words to construct their meaning.
After learning what an expression is, students will discuss why
they think learning about expressions would be useful.
Responses will vary and may include expressions used in science
to test the reactions of different variables, shopping for
groceries, or budgeting.
Checking for Understanding:(5 min, small groups)
Students will work on Try These C parts a-d with their groups.
Students will be selected to work one of the problems step by
step on the whiteboard.
Guided Practice: (10 min, small groups)

minutes.

Students will create a team name and register for the kahoot
quiz using a smartphone or tablet. (Note: each group needs only
one device and groups will be rearranged if one group does not

At the end of the kahoot quiz the team with the highest score will
receive orange tickets as a prize.
Closure: (5 min, grouping)
Students will answer the challenge question in their math
journals.
Assign homework
Students will pack up all materials and prepare to go to the
computer lab. Students will work on IB project Fall Feast for the
remainder of the class.
Independent Practice: (Individual)

What worked:

Improvements:

Having the entire class out of their

seat and singing the Order of
Operations song engaged the
students because they were
completing the motions and singing.

Using more word problems and

having various situations the next
time I teach this lesson could help
students develop a greater
understanding of what variables

Overall Implications for your

teaching:
When incorporating online quizzes
and technology like the kahoot quiz
in future lessons, it would be
beneficial to remind students
beforehand the step by step

In the lesson students also needed
to use order of operations to
evaluate expressions so singing the
song at the beginning of class
helped access prior knowledge and
prepare for new content. Having
students think and discuss about
how the content from this lesson be
useful to them contributed to
student learning because it allowed
them to see a purpose in learning
this information. Incorporating
technology and the kahoot quiz also
engaged students while they
practiced new skills. In later classes,
instead of giving orange tickets to
the winning group I filled in a paw for
that class (the class with the most
paws filled at the end of the
semester will have a party) if every
group had a score above 2500
points. This helped keep students
motivated throughout the quiz even
if their team was not in the top
places.

represent. Incorporating more

situations for context will also
require students to analyze the
situation using reading skills which
would help develop other skills
essential for success in college. Also
using pictures to visualize the
meaning of variables would help
increase student learning of ELLs
and students who have visual
learning preferences.

and the behavior expectations for
the game. Reminding students of
expectations will improve classroom
management during activities so
transitions are smoother and less
class time is wasted. This lesson
used more class time than I had
anticipated, and while I need to be
flexible with time management in
case students need clarification, I
think using a timer for more aspects
of the lesson will help me manage
class time more effectively.
