Abstract
When choosing a rehabilitation center for someone who has a terrible addiction, many factors
can affect which center is best. It is important that the addicts can get the best possible treatment;
therefore, they will not relapse after spending money and effort to become sober. The purpose of
this white paper is to present the Stephenson family with a description of three different rehab
centers that would be best for their daughter. Each center has pros and cons that must be taken
into consideration, and then they can make a decision. This paper with analyze Promises
Rehabilitation Center, Suncoast Rehabilitation Center, and The Betty Ford Center.
Introduction
Drug abuse among teens is on the rise in the United States. Approximately 4.5% of all 12th
graders abuse opioids, but, what are they? According to NIDA for teens, Opioids, which usually
come in pill form, are prescription medications used to reduce pain. Unbelievably, Prescription
drug abuse causes the largest percentage of deaths from drug overdosing. Of the 22,400 drug
overdose deaths in the US in 2005, opioid painkillers were the most commonly found drug,
accounting for 38.2% of these deaths (Drug-Free World). This is an outrageous number and
something needs to be done about it. Pain pills are the most commonly abused drug after
tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana (NIDA).
Purpose Statement
The purpose of this white paper is to give three different rehabilitation options for Lylah
Stephenson. The centers are Suncoast Rehabilitation Center, Promises Treatment Center, and
Betty Ford Center.
12-Step meetings
Equine therapy
Art therapy

Psychiatric care
The second location Promises has is in West Los Angeles, California. This center is dedicated to
young adults, while being close to the beach, movie theaters, shopping, and other daily activities.
Treatment options at this center are still a twelve step treatment, but some special features are as
follows:
Wolf therapy- this is a day-long experience that involves hiking, interacting with wolves
spiritually, and team-building. This helps teach patients effective communication, compassion,
and engagement.
Intensive family therapy- each week a family group is held by a licensed family and
marriage therapist. This helps the family and patient work through issues that could cause the
addiction or have been caused by the addiction. Families may be invited to a four-day intensive
program.
Rock to Recovery- Profession rock musicians come to the center that have struggled with
addiction. This is a fun therapeutic way to demonstrate that sobriety can fuel creativity in
meaningful ways. Patients are encouraged to write their own song and perform it during Rock to
Recovery.
Alumni Events- This is one of the most rewarding events held. Alumni that have become
sober come and interact with patients. Different activities are held such as, barbecues, movie
screenings, and sports leagues. These help show that being young and sober is attainable and
rewarding.
The third and final location is in Austin, Texas. This is not a location that is an option for Lylah
because it is for people 26 and older.

chemical dependency. Promises has many values, including the following: We believe in

we are a family company built on integrity, professionalism and compassion, and we are
committed to the continuous improvement of care and facilities.
Extra Treatment Options
Some of their treatment options differ between the locations, some are the same throughout.
There is a 96 hour assessment in the beginning to determine the treatment that would be best for
the patient. Medical records are attained from the patients primary physician. Many tests are
conducted when dealing with the physical and psychiatric health. After all of the test results
come back a personalized treatment plan is given to the patient.

Choice of location
Most expensive
Suncoast Rehabilitation Center is located in Springhill, Florida. Their program is results based.
They believe there shouldnt be a time limit to sobriety. Although there isnt a time limit, most
graduates are done within three to four months. This program is called The Narconon Program.
This includes eight phases of treatment. The first stage includes a classroom like learning to get
the patients out of the addiction thought process and into being comfortable with their
surroundings. Once addicts can focus on the here and now rather than the past problems they
move onto phase two.
Most of the drug metabolites remain in the body; this acts as a reminder of the drug and makes
the patient want the drug. To stop the physical cravings the individual will undergo 20-30 min of
light aerobic activity and 15-20 min in a sauna to help sweat the metabolites out of the fatty cells.
The daily program lasts about five hours a day and could take two to six weeks for entire phase
to be completed. Once all physical wants and needs for the drug are stopped, patients move onto
phase three.
Phase three helps the patients to gain the ability of attaining and retaining knowledge again and
applying the knowledge they learned. These skills are then used through the remainder of the
program.
Phase four enables the patients to get away from the blindfold that drugs put on them. This phase
includes two series of communication exercises. The exercises help improve their ability to
confront situations that are hard to deal with and increase understanding and ability to
communicate. Then two addicts co-counsel each other and help each other through a series of
exercises. To move onto Phase five the patients must be able to show they can rationally and
clearly look at their life and begin to identify the positive and negative people, influences, and
relationships that exist.
10
Phase five shows addicts how to better their entire life now that an addiction isnt controlling
their life. They must come out of their anti-social attitude and realize the relationships they are
going to have to jeopardize to stay sober. This also includes finding the people that will help
them stay sober and keeping those with a positive influence in their life. Once all negative
relationships are discontinued the patient moves onto phase six.
Phase six is a confessional procedure which allows the addict to experience relief. When they are
addicted to something this causes a ripple effect of crimes, to allow their addiction to continue.
They finally become aware of all the damage they are responsible for and that it needs to be
repaired, allowing them to start the process of repairing those negative effects. True happiness
will be restored and the patient can start living a happy and ethical life style.
Phase seven is the phase where action is starting to take place. The patient will create a plan to
repair the broken relationships that the drug caused and helps them realize their existence is
important in the world. Once they have a plan and create their own set of rules of conduct for
responsible living they move onto the final phase.
In phase eight a class on moral code of conduct is taught. The patients create goals/a plan that is
kept on file at the facility. Once the graduates have left they are called to check on the progress
of their sobriety and their plan is assessed to see how it is working out.

Recommendation
Every rehabilitation center believes their center is the best. That is fine; everyone is entitled to
their own opinion. When choosing one for Lylah, we need to figure out which one is best for her.
While all the options look hopeful, I believe that Promises Rehabilitation Center would be best.
On the fix website there are centers all across America that are compared, and this is one of the
higher ones. Promises has the highest recovery rate, of 90%, which makes me believe if that
many people are successful, she will be too. The center in West Los Angeles, California is the
best location I think. It is her perfect age group. The activities they do would also help Lylah
become sober. She likes to go shopping in the city and would be able to do that, while also
enjoys nature and the animals on hikes. If this is the center that the family chooses, call 866-8294052 to start the road to recovery.
