Introduction & Background

An artificial earth satellite that facilitates communications, as radio,
television, and telephone transmissions, by means of the reflection or the
amplification and retransmission of signals between stations on earth

1st Satellite Sputnik launched in 1957

1st communication satellite was Syncom 2 launched in 1963
1st satellite to broadcast a TV signal was in 1962
1st satellite to be able to broadcast D2H television in 1976

Concept of Satellite
A satellite works by receiving radio signals sent from the Earth and
resending the radio signals back down to the Earth. In a simple system, a
signal is reflected by the satellite

Broadcast processes
Analog
Digital
ATSC(Advanced Television Systems Committee standards)
DTMB(Digital Terrestrial Multimedia Broadcast)

DVB(Digital Video Broadcasting)

ISDB(Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting)

Broadcast processes
DVB
Widely used system
It uses Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM)
Data rates from 4 MBit/s up to 24 MBit/s

Broadcast processes
CNN uplinks (sends) their signal to the Telstar 6 satellite located at 93.0 West on
Transponder 22. The location of a satellite is given in degrees away from the
Greenwich meridian.

Receiving Process

In a single receiver residential installation there is a single coaxial cable running

from the receiver set-top box in the building to the LNB on the dish. The DC electric
power for the LNB is provided through the same coaxial cable conductors that carry
the signal to the receiver.

SNG
Satellite news gathering (SNG) is the use of mobile communications
equipment for the purpose of worldwide newscasting

Drawback
The disadvantages of satellite communication:
Launching satellites into orbit is costly.
Satellite bandwidth is gradually becoming used up.
There is a larger propagation delay in satellite communication than in
terrestrial communication
