Lesson Plan 2

Standards
1.OA.A.2: Operations and Algebraic Thinking
Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction.
2. Solve word problems that call for addition of three whole numbers whose sum is less than or
equal to 20, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown
number to represent the problem.
This lesson has been inspired by a resource found on teachers.net
Objective
Students will deepen their understanding of the concept of addition through oral storytelling with
the use of manipulatives. They will connect addition word problems to math equations, and write
the equations they come up with down.
SWBAT create addition word problems of their own using the important main words given to
them. Also, students can interpret word problems and pull out key information to solve the
problem.
Procedure
Anticipatory Set: To begin the lesson, I will ask the students to join me on the carpet in two
different circles (inner and outer). The students on the inner circle will be given white boards and
markers while the outer circle will have their notebooks and a pencil. Each circle will have
manipulatives available for them to use in which ever way they choose. Only one student will be
writing at a time. I will explain to the outer circle that will be writing the stories/word problems
that they must use the three words first, then, together in their story. In their notebooks they will
write down the math addition problem they come up with, which can be able anything as long as
it relates to addition in math.
Students waiting in the inner circle for their word problem from their outer circle partner will be
practicing reading other word problems on slips of paper provided on their own and solving them
on their whiteboards. I will come around and check after theyre done before they can move onto
the next slip of paper with a new word problem or talking with their partner.
Once each student is done with their main task, the student from the outer circle will read their
made up word problem to the student on the inner circle and that student will have to listen
carefully to pull out key information and write down an equation and solve. Once complete, I

will check to make sure the equation and answer is correct and the students will switch spots in
the circles and their tasks/roles will switch as well.
Before the activity, I will briefly explain what each student will be doing with an example for
each activity. After partners each go and take a turn on the inner and outer circle, the inner circle
will rotate changing whom each student is partnered up with. Once this activity is done, students
can complete an addition worksheet if time permits.
Each round of the activity will be 5 minutes long until the roles switch.
Assessment:
Students will demonstrate an understanding of creating word problems based on what they come
up with and write down in their notebooks, which I will be able to go back and look at. Also, I
can assess them individually and in pairs when I come around to check their work and
answers/equations.
