Engagement/Anticipatory Set
I know we have previously read Rufus Goes to School but this time were going to do
something a little different. I am going to teach about think notes. Think notes are small
thoughts that we have during our reading that we write down on sticky note and place
on the page. We do this because it makes it easier for us to remember what we were
thinking while we were reading and share with others.

Mentor teach and model

Starts reading a few pages
Stop on page 8, hmm I wonder why Rufus looks at a book everyday that he cannot
read. That is strange! I think I am going to write that on a sticky note and place it on
page two.

note. The teacher writes her own thought down. Each student shares their thought and
the teacher shares hers. All sticky notes are placed on the page.
The teacher briefly reviews what is happening in the story
Stop on page 24.
Id like you to write down your thought down for this page. Think about the story so

The teacher writes her own thought down. Each student shares their thought and the
teacher shares hers. All sticky notes are placed on the page.

Stop on page 31.
Ask students to write down thoughts once more, sharing thoughts after they have
written them.
Independent Application
Now I want you to go into your chapter book and show me how you write a Think
Note!
Students are asked to write think notes while they read their own assigned books
during each chapter. They are asked to share in groups.
Closure
It is important for us to write down our thoughts on think notes so that we can review
the story and what our thoughts were as we were reading. This gives us a better
understanding of the story and how it plays out. It also allows us to keep track and
share easily with our group!
Assessment
Students write down appropriate thoughts and place them on their pages as they read.
They share their think notes with their groups.
Differentiation
Different books are given to students on separate levels.
