Math Lesson Plan

Standard: 4.NBT.A.1 Recognize that in a multi-digit whole number, a digit in one place
represents ten times what it represents in the place to its right.
Objective: SWBAT multiply by multiples of 10 and 100.
Materials: Math notebook, textbook, and pencil.
Procedure: I will call the students to the carpet and tell them to bring their math notebook,
textbook, and pencil. I will write the math objective on the board and the students will copy the
objective into their math notebooks.
Model- I will tell the students that we will be working on multiplying by multiples of 10 and
100. I will have some students provide some multiples of 10 and then some multiples of 100. I
will explain how we will be working with these numbers today. I will write down the problem 3
x 50 on the board. I will ask the students to tell me whether we are working with a multiple of 10
or 100. Then, I will explain how when we are multiplying by multiples of 10 or 100 we can use
our basic multiplication facts to help us solve the problem. I will tell the students to ignore the 0
in 50 and tell me what 3 times 5 equals. Once the students say 15, I will explain how when we
multiply by multiples of 10 we use our basic multiplication facts and then add 1 zero to the
answer. I will repeat the same procedure with another example of 9 x 20.
I will then show the students how to multiply by multiples of 100. I will use the problem
3 x 300. I will ask for the basic multiplication fact first, so 3 x 3 and then explain how when we
multiply by multiples of 100 we add 2 zeroes to our answer. I will also model another example
of 5 x 600.
Guided Practice- I will write problems 1, 2, 3 and 4 on the board from page 96. The students will
work on the problems for a few minutes. Then, I will randomly pull 4 popsicle sticks and have
the chosen students come up to the board to solve their problem. We will go over the answers as
a whole group.
Independent Practice- I will assign problems 9, 11,14,16,18,20,22,24, 27 and 28 on page 96.
Once the students complete these 10 problems, they can check their answers on the answer key. I
will have 4 copies of the answer key printed out in the front of the room, so the students can
check their answers quickly.
Assessment: I will assess the students based on the independent practice problems they
complete. In addition, the students will complete a worksheet with more practice problems from
lesson 5-1 for homework.
