Copyright infringement is when an editor infringes the rights of the owner and may be
liable for the damages taken from the author. The 1976 Copyright law gives protection to
creative works according to the First Amendment Handbook. By obtaining the author and
receiving permission to use his/her work, is a way to avoid copyrighting. Another way to avoid
copyrighting is to avoid using large quantities of ones work. If the author is not reachable, then
paraphrasing is needed to perform the task and avoiding copyright laws. Some legal actions to
protect against copyright are that the owner has the option to sue the copyrighter in a federal
court. The owner is capable of recovering any damages and the amount can range from $200 $150,000 based upon the courts decision. (Leslie & Dalglish).

How Do I Avoid Copyright Infringement?


Copyrighting is one of the most misunderstood areas of the law. By knowing and
understanding the laws it will be essential in todays lifestyle. With todays society, everything
is found on the internet, copyrighting is easy, but can catch you easily. If the product that one is
looking for is easily found, chances are that it already has copyrights, according to Rocket
Lawyer. The term fair use is used in noncommercial purposes such as teaching, commentary,
or criticism. Getting permission from the owner is always the best option. In some cases
protection doesnt apply. This is because facts and ideas are considered to be public domain
meaning that it is easy to write your own literature book based on historical events. All in all, if
one is ever questioned by a copyrighting law, consult a lawyer or the copyrighting laws. (Rocket
