Determine the meaning of symbols, key terms, and other

domain-specific words and phrases as they are used in a
specific scientific or technical context relevant to grades 6-8
texts and topics.
LIVING ENVIRONMENT 1.2G Each cell is covered by a
membrane that performs a number of important functions
for the cell. These include: separation from its outside
environment, controlling which molecules enter and leave
the cell, and recognition of chemical signals. The processes
of diffusion and active transport are important in the
movement of materials in and out of cells.

Motivation: Osmosis Song

DO NOW: Turn & Talk (5 minutes)

In your own words, define the

following words:
Passive
Active
Transport
Concentration

MINI LESSON: 15 minutes

Diffusion
Movement of molecules

from an area of high

concentration to an
area of low
concentration
Molecules spread to
balance/equal out the
concentration

Cellular Transport
The movement of molecules into and out of a cell
Two Major Types
Passive Transport- molecules move from high to low
- no energy is required
Active Transport- molecules move from low to high
- energy is required

Which organelle/cellular structure involved?

Cell Membrane

Passive Transport
Movement of molecules across

a membrane down the

concentration gradient, from
high to low concentration
without using energy
HIGH
concentration

to

LOW
concentration

Diffusion
Movement of molecules

across a membrane
without using energy
Molecules move down

the concentration
gradient until equal on
both sides

Osmosis
Diffusion of water across a membrane
Equalizes concentrations on both sides of membrane

Facilitated Diffusion
Diffusion of molecules

across a membrane with

the help of a membrane
protein
Hundreds of protein

channels in a cell
membrane
Many channels are specific

for only one molecule

Active Transport
Movement of molecules

across a membrane by
using energy
Movement of molecules

against/up the
concentration gradient
From low to high

concentration
