Shear Stress in Beams

7.1 Show that the maximum flexural shear stress in a rectangular beam is 50% greater than the mean
value for the section.
7.2 A rectangular channel section, 500 mm wide, 300 mm deep and 25 mm thick, is used as a beam in
the form of a trough. Derive equations in which the shear stress at any layer in the vertical sides may
be found under a vertical shear force of 9 kN. Plot the distribution showing major values. Find the
fraction of the total shear force carried by the vertical sides.
