Pristane-Induced Arthritis (PIA) in rats

Model description
Pristane-induced arthritis (PIA) is one of the most
reproducible forms of experimental arthritis in rats.
Characteristics
PIA is the preclinical model of arthritis that mimics most
of the criteria used for diagnosis of the human RA. Hence,
PIA displays symmetry of inflammation with a chronic
relapsing disease course and infiltration of T cells,
infl ammation, edema and erosive destruction of
peripheral joints.
PIA is the most predictable model of arthritis in rats with
incidence above 95%. PIA is dependent on CD4+ T cells
with possibility of adoptive transfer of disease. In
comparison to collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) in rats, PIA
has an earlier onset, is less variable and have an
inflammation that is more localised to wrist/ankle joints.
