Dear Julie,
I am submitting my final project for grading. I chose to revise my evaluation paper. Frist
off I want to apologize for not being able to participate in class much, especially on
Wednesdays. I work graveyards at the hospital. I work every Tuesday night and going to class
right after being up all night and the day before is a struggle, but I did try my best to attend
most of class.
For my paper Ive made many changes in hopes that my paper will be better, for the
changes are in purple. The highlighting really hurts my eyes. I changed a few grammar errors
Ive made like italicizing the songs when they dont need to and correct punctuation. I also
added a new paragraph that evaluates the actors and how they fit their characters they play.
I had the opportunity, with writing this paper, to evaluate the classical Disney movie,
The Lion King; one of my personal favorite childhood movies. To evaluate this paper properly, I
had to find credible information on the movie. Then with this information I expanded with
adding my opinions of what I thought about the movie, like how the actors fit the characters,
how the music brings the movie or Broadway to life. Having the help of those that peep edit
my paper I could better write this paper for my audience I was going for to convincing, which
were college students. I was glad my teacher was willing to review my paper because her
opinion is what will matter at the end. If you have any question please contact me at
ktayl197@bruinmail.slcc.edu. Thank you for your time.

Naaaaants ingonyamaaaaaa bagithi baba (Circle of Life). The disguising African chant pierces
through the silence in the room as the movie begins with the sun rising. Many have now come to know
this as the opening scene of The Lion King. The Lion King is a classical Disney movie that every child
should see. Its full of exotic African animals, music that makes you want to join in and sing, and a
dramatic story of how a young lion cub became King.
The writers of The Lion King had the story roughly based on Shakespeares tragedy of Hamlet.
Where Prince Hamlets (Simba) father, Old Hamlet (King Mufasa), was killed by Claudius (Scar), Old
Hamlets brother. Hamlet plots his revenge on Claudius. In the end everyone dies (Alchin). The ending
for The Lion King, however, was more of a standard Disney ending, a happily ever after.
Unlike most Disney films, this story begins with a musical African chant and flows into the
famous song of the Circle of Life; with safari animals gathering together to celebrate the birth of

Simba, the son of the Lion King, Mufasa. The uncle of Simba, Scar, becomes jealous that hes now
second in line to the throne. Plots were made with three scavenging hyenas to kill both King Mufasa and
young Simba. Simba survives the murder plot where King Mufasa does not. Scar makes Simba believe he
is the one who caused the Kings death and forces the young cub to run away into exile. While living in
exile, Simba grows into an adult lion. He becomes friends with two unlikely animals, Timon (Nathan
Lane) a meerkat and Pumba (Erine Sabella) a warthog. They live in a place where only Hakuna Matata
matters. Yet when he reunites with a childhood friend, Nala (Moira Kelly); Simba faces the reality that he
cant run away from his past, but that he needs to face it. As he returns to Pride Rock, his childhood
home, he overcomes the harsh realities of his uncles rule and restores order in the land.
This Disney classic was directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minoff. Allers also previously directed
Beauty and the Beast (1991) and Aladdin (1992), two classic Disney princess movies. Belle from Beauty
and the Beast is one of my personal favorite Disney princess characters, and Princess Jasmine from
Aladdin makes a perfect companion for the elusive, clever thief Aladdin. Minoff directed both Stuart
Little (1999) and Stuart Little 2 (2002). Both directors won the LAFCA Award for Best Animated Movie
(IMDB).
The cast of The Lion King is a cast that fits the characters perfectly. Whoopi Goldberg is the voice
of one of the three troublesome hyenas, Shenzi (IMDB). Goldberg has appeared in many comedic roles
to reflect the hyenas as comical. The other co-stars who voiced the other two hyenas are Cheech Marin
as Banzai and Jim Cummings as Ed. Jonathan Taylor Thomas plays the voice of a young Simba. It was
during this time that he was cast in the popular 1990s TV sitcom, Home Improvement, with Tim Allen
(IMDB). A few years later, he later was in the popular 1990s TV show of Home Improvement with Tim
Allen (IMDB). Jonathan was one of Tim Allens sons in the show. Hes good as playing a clever son by
using logic to get what he wants. The older Simba is voiced by a man whos famously known by one

name, Bueller, Ferris Bueller. Matthew Broderick became well known from his big hit movie Ferris
Buellers Day Off (1986) (IMDB). Voicing the older Simba is a little different role from playing a young
high schooler skipping school for the day, but he did very well playing the part. Jeremy Irons voiced the
evil uncle, Scar. He is in the recent TV series called The Borgias (IMDB). He plays two similar characters
that commit a crime to rise into power. The most famous of the popular cast of The Lion King was none
other than James Earl Jones, the voice of Mufasa. James is well-known as the voice of Darth Vader from
the legendary Star Wars series. He took on the two different roles of a father in each of the two classical
movies.
One critic said, The Lion King, complete with jaunty songsis undeniably and fully worthy of its
glorious Disney heritage (Rotten Tomato). The music is what truly made the movie. The songs are
uniquely created to catch your attention; the beginning scene, being a great example, with an African
chant and continuing to the song The Circle of Life. The music was written by the famous Elton John
and Tim Rice. Elton John wrote many of the songs whereas Tim Rice wrote the lyrics. One of my personal
favorites is I Just Cant Wait to Be King; which can be changed to I Just Cant Wait to Be Queen for
girls who wish to emulate the thought of someday becoming queens. The song is sung by the young
Simba who cant wait to be king. He wont be told what to do all the time, especially by King Mufasas
assistant Zazu (Rowan Atkinson). The other side of the music, where only instruments are playing, is the
score of the movie. It was written by the great German composer Hans Zimmer (IMDB), who is credited
for the score of Disneys Pirates of the Caribbean and Chicken Little. He incorporates music brought from
the African culture to the songs he composes. Many can recognize his African style being tied to The Lion
King. Zimmer also composed the songs to have deep, flowing emotions throughout the film so you can
feel what Simba is feeling.

The Lion King was released on June 24, 1994, and is Walt Disneys 32nd full-length feature film.
The story behind the making of The Lion King was that the team that created it was actually Disneys B
Team. Team A was working on Pocahontas at the time, because they thought it would produce a better
outcome. Its funny how Team B out did Team A; when A was supposedly the better of the two teams.
On opening weekend, Team B gave Team A a run for their money. The Lion King grossed $44,654,884,
whereas Pocahontas only earned 9,423,433 (IMDB). The Lion King ended up being Disneys all-time
grossing film until Disneys Frozen, a tale of two sisters saving each other, came out in November 2013.
Despite being second place for the highest grossing Disney film of all time; The Lion King to this day is
still shown in South Africa, Madrid, Spain, and Tokyo, Japan. The movie was such a hit that a few short
years later in 1997, it was made into a critically acclaimed Broadway musical.
Broadway is a very popular way to see The Lion King and is as spectacular as the movie. The
culture of Africa is deeply shown between the music and the performance of the characters. The
costumes and makeup for the different African animal characters are crafted with such prefect detail.
The performers that play each character show how involved they are in their character. Like the movie,
the music sung throughout the show is wonderful. Many of the original songs from the movie are
included and many more have been added to make it a musical. An amazing part of the musical were
the added songs composed by Hans Zimmer like, King of Pride Rock which makes you a feel like youre
a part of the musical. In recent months, The Lion King musical has become the most successful box
office total of any work in any media in entertainment history (Kenney). It has since surpassed the once
leading Broadway musical, Phantom of the Opera.
Whether you are watching The Lion King from the classic movie or seeing it come to life through
Broadway, the experience is still magical. Its easy to become engrossed from the very beginning of the
film to the very end. Kids of all ages are able to enjoy a story of safari animals in Africa as profound

characters and the unforgettable African style music to make you want to be a part of their Circle of
