Unit Title: Creating a Android Mobile Phone App

Duration: 7 weeks
Mobile App Computing and programming have become a huge factor our daily
lives. There are many ways to do this and MIT App creator is just one. Technology
and design in the world around us is evolving and changing at a rapid rate. The
environment that students will graduate, work and retire in will be very different from the one we are in
now. Students will be introduced and become familiar with the process of creating, modifying and designing
a mobile phone Android app.

MYP Statement of Inquiry: How does logic, sequences, patience and creativity affect App programming?
Key Concept:

Related Concepts:

System: Computer programming requires logic and a

systematic approach to make things work

Adaptation: Mobile App programming is made up of small

blocks of commands and when put together correctly work as
a whole

Global Context:
Scientific and technical innovation: Computer programming and game design are increasing in complexity and flexibility and programs are written for
specific purposes.

Inquiry Questions:
Factual Questions

: How to control the virtual environment?

Conceptual Questions : How to combine visual effects with aesthetics and purpose
Debatable Questions : Has the virtual environment become more important for learning than the traditional?

Assessment:
Criteria

Content/Tasks

A. Inquiring and Analysing

Add all your work to your digital portfolio (Weebly). Use print screen to document all your work and
embed all YouTube tutorials on your site for this introduction stage
Research: You need to learn how to control the virtual environment; you will do this in the first few
lessons by:

Becoming familiar with the user area

Learn how to test your App on your Android device or the app emulator
Follow the tutorials and create the Text to talk App
Follow the tutorials on the I have a dream app
Create Digital Doodle App and modify it
How to store and distribute your app

Use print screen to document all your work and embed all YouTube tutorials on your site for this
introduction stage
1.

Choose a more complex App from the list to create and write a Design Context in your own
words describing the design situation for your chosen App

2.

Product Research: Create, examine and review the App Inventor program of your choice and
then list and explain what blocks, components, variables, event handlers and procedures are
used.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------B. Developing Ideas

1. What will make your chosen App more interesting, complicated and more user friendly. Write a set
of 6 design specifications that you will aim to achieve.
2. Outline at least 3 feasible modifications for your ideas. On your website show variations in: images,
colour and block combinations.
3. Explain the Design ideas against Design Specifications
4. Chosen one idea and explain why you think its a winner.
5. Outline the App inventor tools and blocks you plan to use for your idea.
6. You will modify your chosen App and make it more interesting and a little bit more complicated.
Describe how Apps have changed and developed over time and how you could modify your App to
suit a certain target audience.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------C. Creating the Solution
1. Create your variation of your chosen App
2. Review the way you made the App and explain how and why the changes happened
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

D. Evaluating
1.
Test your chosen App, how will you know if it is any good? Write a set of questions, based on
the Design Specifications, and get some feedback from others after they have played it by
creating a survey on your website for others to complete.
2.

Conduct the Evaluation and critically report of the level of success of each
Design Specification.

3.

Self Reflection and recommendations of the I have a dream game, explain how it could be
improved and/or developed.

4.
Explain how the product fitted with the client.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Key Personal & Social Skills
Students are respectful of all teaching staff and each other. They respect the working environment. They are
committed to learning with few absences, punctual and work is completed as requested. They work
consistently and have ongoing work to represent their ideas during and at the end of the project. They
develop the ability to reflect on the work they have completed.
On your site you should have
Continuous evidence (screen shots) of your design work and research. Including the following Apps
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
