Annotated Bibliography for Illegal Immigration Paper
Immigration Security Checks: How and Why the Process Works. Washington, D.C.: U.S.
Dept. of Homeland Security, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, 2006.
Internet resource.
This fact sheet was written by the United States Government to discuss why its
immigration security checks actually work and how they actually work. It describes the
security checks that applicants go through and the process of back ground checks
I like this fact sheet because it is factual information about an important part of
the immigration process. It is important to know what the process is step by step like it is
laid out in the fact sheet. I like how easy it is to read it and understand it. I think this will
be a strong source even though it is so short.
This fact sheet is a credible source because it is a fact sheet written by the United
States Government. Specifically, the US Citizen and Immigration Services wrote the fact
sheet for people to understand the process better.

Joppke, Christian. Challenge to the Nation-State: Immigration in Western Europe and the
United States. Oxford, England: Oxford University Press, 1998. Print.
This book was written by Christian Joppke to present at workshops on politics of
immigration. I chose to read the first chapter that poses the issue of immigration on the
nation-state. This first chapter addresses many different challenges like getting

citizenship and multiculturalism. He talks about different scholars opinions on these
challenges.
This article isnt very orthodox but is full of different studies that Joppke has been
following. I think it is important to find different views from different studies so there can
be less bias when I write my paper. I think this source will be more and more useful as I
start writing my paper. I think each chapter that I read will add more knowledge and
depth to my paper.
This source is credible because of the positions of power that the people who are
contributing to the paper are holding. Most of the contributors in this book are head
researchers and well-known universities, which makes that credible.

Maril, Robert L. The Fence: National Security, Public Safety, and Illegal Immigration
Along the U.s.-Mexico Border. Lubbock, Tex: Texas Tech University Press, 2011.
Print.
This book is full of interviews and short stories on people who have built the
fence between the US and Mexico borders. Along with these interviews and short stories,
Maril proposes his own ideas on public policies and things he believes should be done.
Maril writes his book almost like a fiction novel, even though it is highly factual.
I actually really enjoyed reading about his childhood on the Texan borders and about the
coyotes that take immigrants in illegally. I am looking forward to reading more of his
book. I think this source will really contribute to the illegal side of immigration and what
it actually looks like.

This is a credible source because Maril was a researcher for ECU and was
founding director of the Center for Diversity and Inequality Research and ECU as well.
He has written many other books based on his research through the years.
Carr, Matthew. Fortress Europe: Dispatches from a Gated Continent. New York: New
Press, 2012. Print.
This book was written by a journalist to uncover the war on immigration in
Europe. He describes the stories of tens of thousands of victims have died of human
rights crisis all over Europe.
I think Carr has done a lot of research but also has a lot of bias. Carr is a journalist
and has had many years of practicing bias writing but what I have read so far is very
interesting. I really like how he is trying to uncover what most people have never heard
of. This book will be good when I talk about why people immigrate illegally and how
huge its consequences are on the people themselves.
This source is credible because Carr has asked researchers from all over the world
to contribute to his book. Many of the things written are first hand accounts of what
people have seen so he isnt just taking his information off the Internet. I think this will
be a strong source when I discuss consequences of immigration.

Martin addresses immigration and how it has attributed to poverty in rural areas
of America. Martin has come up with a business labor model that he has used to prove
that seasonal labor is something our country should strive to regulate.
The first thing I read from this source was the Prologue which told this elaborate
story of a migrant farm worker and how his seasonal work took a toll on his family. I
think it is interesting that Martin would start his book off talking about how hard it is for
the worker when the rest of the book is about how bad workers are for the country. I
think it is good to have both sides of the story. His business model will be a good thing to
include in my presentation because it is a good visual of how immigration affects the US
economically.
Martin has written a credible source by getting in touch with thousands of
researchers to create his own model. Martin himself has written over 150 published
articles about labor in the United States.
