LESSON PLAN FORMAT
Description of Classroom:
7th grade English/Reading class. General Education students.
Student seating is small groupings of 4 desks pushed together.
Technology centers of computers, enough for each group (8-10 comps.).
Smart Board.
Elmo Projector.
Background:
Any background knowledge students can bring to the topics introduced in the
novel.
Content Objective(s):
Students will identify adolescent themes through a cultural assimilation story.
Students will identify stereotypes in Section 1 of the graphic novel.
Students will provide textual evidence from the novel as they answer questions
about the novel.
Language Objective(s):

Nevada Standards:
CCSS. ELA-Literacy.L.6.2 Determine a theme or central idea of a text and how
it is conveyed through particular details, provide a summary of the text distinct

a text and explain how it is conveyed in the text.

Warm Up Activity:
Show students 2 videos introducing them to the graphic novel American Born
Chinese by Gene Yang.

Lesson Sequence:
Pre-reading activity: Journal Entry
Show students a panel from the graphic novel, American Born Chinese by Gene
Yang, of an old woman giving the main character Jin Wang advice saying, Its
easy to become anything you wish so long as youre willing to forfeit you soul.
Have the students write in their writers journals the quote and what they think
the line means, especially in the context that it is advice from an elderly person to
a young child. Direct their attention to the visual clues found in the graphic
nature of the novel. (5 mins.)
Students will share with class and discuss. (5 mins.)
Ask students to volunteer to read the roles of the characters of Section 1.
After all roles are taken/assigned, have volunteers read Section 1. (15 mins.)
After class is finished reading the section, ask the students the following
questions and write some of the answers on the board (ask students for textual
proof or quotes from novel): (15 mins.)
a. What are the main features of graphic novels that you can identify in
American Born Chinese?
b. How would you define the narrative style, structure, characters, etc.?
c. What is the main idea/theme of Section 1?
d. How do the characters facial expressions reflect their personality?

e. Are there any stereotypes that you can identify in Section 1?
f. Are there any adolescent themes or issues that you can identify in Section 1?
Conclude class by asking students if they can personally relate to the first Section
of American Born Chinese or any of the stereotypes that they were able to
identify. (5 mins.)

Review/Assessment:
Writers Journals graded with a check mark for completion=100%=5 points or no
check mark which means the entry did not meet the writing requirements for
their writers journals.
