By: Sana Khatri, Anie Reyes, Abbey Bumgarner, Brett Fann, Dylan Rickard
Case Presenter: Presents the case to court.
Prosecutor: Represents the many people that are against ACT scores and SAT scores as a
way to admit students in college and most of the reason to award scholarships.
Defendant: Represents the college admissions that do look at the SAT and ACT.
Judge: Makes the final judgment which in a way is the solutions.
Case Presenter: (Walks into court room and faces the crowd) Hello everyone. (Faces the
judge)
I bring before the judge the case of Students v. Admissions Boards in which students are
fighting against the misuse of SAT and ACT scores for college admission. The prosecution may
now present their case. (Takes a seat in the front row of benches along with the
audience/crowd)

Prosecutor: (Stands up and gathers papers in a pile)

In recent years, the idea of standardized testing has become such a common
phenomena, which includes students from all over the United States and the World. As the
years go on and on, students are taking more and more standardized tests.

We also have the SAT and ACT which every high school is very familiar with and sometimes
even dread. We now want to speak against it. According to Robert J. Sternberg, author of novel
"College Admissions for the 21st Century", the SAT is made to measure one's "achievements";
however, these "achievements" they are claiming to measure cannot be scaled based off of
social science methods.

Common Beliefs on the Purpose of the SAT

Although many believe the test such as these can rank human intelligence on a scale, many
strongly feel that Human INTELLIGENCE is so multifaceted, so complex, so varied, that no
standardized testing system can be expected to capture it"

Effective Measurement of Intelligence?

So we ask today, are these scores actually an effective way of deciding a students future? Are
there any way we can better measure this? That is all you honor.

People start to chatter in the crowd loudly. The judge hits his gavel on the sound block.
Judge: Order! Order!

Presenter: Stands up and addresses the defendant. Now, the defense can present their
argument. Sits down.

Defense: Stands up to address the judge. Your honor, the SAT and ACT have been an
important component from ages ago. Tests were put in place after 200 B.C. in order for
individuals to get hired by the Chinese Imperial Civil Service. You cant just change the system.
Also, those scores along with academics make students eligible for scholarships that help them
attend college. It is not academically fair to be awarded a scholarship just because of whom
you are attracted to like the Elmhurst College sexual orientation scholarship. Academics are
needed. The people that work hard to get to high places.

That is all your honor.

Sits down. Crowd starts to murmur again. Judge hits his gavel on the sound block

Judge- Order! Order! I have my verdict! The room silences. Can the prosecutor and defendant
please stand up. The SAT and ACT are not completely hopeless. It's a good measure to see
how well teachers within the school system have taught their kids up to their senior year.
However, for the student, other factors should come into play that would more accurately
produce a better prediction for their first year in college.Since those behind the SAT are focused
on what will benefit a student's life, why not incorporate activities that would evolve them more
in character and their education. Students wouldn't feel so limited in the world and would truly
have more opportunities in the world.
