Running head: CHILD CASE STUDY

1
Child Case Study

When entering the preschool environment I was unsure of what I was looking for when
beginning the journey of the practicum. What kind of child/children were I going to be involved
with? How many personalities were going to be involved? The questions continued, but after
spending two weeks in the classroom with my preschoolers I found a particular individual who
instantly grabbed my attention. This child was not just any child, but a child who held a different
kind of attention as compared to the other children, a child who had a different way of focusing
and contributing to the classroom setting.
Week one and week two passed and I saw the different changes in the little boy, and the
personality which began to set in to the mood of the classroom. His anger and strong behavior
affected the whole room and brought off an instant vibe of wildness and disorderly. Every child
in the room had their own place, but this particular child caused rowdiness, and a different
behavior which showed during both work and play time. Spending time with other children
playing or participating in an activity seemed to be a strong and caused different vibes
throughout the room.
After weeks of observing and seeing the different attitudes the child showed not only to
the other children but to the teachers also, I learned there is more behind this childs bad
behavior, something deeper within. The childs behavior is through words of anger but also
through actions and ways of approaching different situations. The child cannot focus or stay on
any task for more than a few minutes then gets easily frustrated in any situation or activity given.
Out of control and strong feelings of anger are two ways of describing the child and his actions
in the classroom.

CHILD CASE STUDY

I chose this child for my child case study because he is someone who showed different
variations of actions, attitudes, and emotions in the classroom and gave myself a different
perspective on children and how they react to different things. The child case study and
observations made, allowed me to see the small things which are involved with a child and
opened new ideas and tactics to helping those children who are just a little different. I worked
with my lead teacher on learning new ways of patience and persistence with the child. As the
semester went on I learned many people have lost patience with the child and as my job and my
hours spent in the classroom, I wanted to help him deal with patience, it sure did push mine but
the weeks have helped us both learn.
Observations from watching him complete a painting activity to writing his name were
major keys to seeing his future focus in kindergarten. Forcing a child to do something will not
help them, but giving children more opportunities to show their strong points is very important
and we worked on those things throughout the weeks. The actions of this child gave me every
reason to continuing my observations and spend some more time interacting with him and
learning more.
A childs whole life starts at home, and after learning the home life of this particular child
I learned, the attitude and anger came from where he started. Every child reacts differently, but
this child has learned using anger is how he chooses to do things and it shows throughout the
classroom in every aspect, from throwing things at his friends to yelling at his teachers to an
extent they could not stop him. I have learned a lot from this one child and have a chance to
know use what I have learned in future classroom and help others with their anger and different
situations and allow them to learn through not just books or activities but through words and
actions.
