CHDV 210 Curriculum Activities Self Evaluation Form

Please reflect on these questions as you evaluate each of the 5 activities that you present.

Why did you choose this particular activity? (DRDP, conversation with child, etc.)
This activity allowed the children to express themselves through movement. It also allows
them to use their fine and gross motor, as well as, spatial awareness and locomotor skills.
Even though most of these movements mature on their own, there is still some that, involve
greater coordination of muscles, senses, and feedback loops require a certain amount of
direction and refinement (Epstein, 2007, p. 94).

What were the strong points of this activity?

The children really enjoyed having their own parade with instruments. The children were
able to keep themselves lined up and gave each other the space they needed to jump, march,
and skip. Graham, Holt/Hale, and Parker (2004) explain that using these movement concepts,
helps to modify or enrich the range of movement skills and effectiveness of childrens use
of skills (Epstein, 2007, p. 90). They followed the leader and took turns being the leader.
According to the text, Being leaders develops childrens confidence and independence, as
well as makes them more aware of verbal labels and motions because they have to
communicate them to other (Epstein, 2007, p. 94). They were attentive when it came to
listening for the bell when to stop and go.

What were the weak areas?

During the time I did my outdoor activity they were doing construction in the playground so
the children were limited to a certain part of the area. This didnt allow for them travel
everywhere they wanted to explore as the parade was going on. I also wish there was a way
that I couldve incorporated music outside, therefore, enhancing their parade experience.

What specific changes did you try out when you presented the activity a second time?
For the second time I gave the children more of a choice of what they wanted to do in the
parade, for example, some wanted to jump, some wanted to tip toe, some wanted to kick in
the air. I also allowed the children to switch instruments with whomever they wanted, giving
them the opportunity to communicate with one another.

Evaluate the success of these revisions. How might you improve next time? (Focus on your
teaching skills)

Did your curriculum activity meet your stated objective? Support your answer with specific
examples from your observation of the childrens involvement in the activity.
Children used their gross motors skills as they marched lifting their legs up high. Fine motor
skills were used when they played each instrument that required them to use different actions
to make sounds. A lot of spatial awareness was used as they followed each other through
different pathways. The area was a large open space where, children are less likely to bump
into one another or objects as they experiment with movement (Epstein, 2007, p. 100). This
was much needed for them to explore different movements especially because they had to
learn to give themselves a good distance away from one another.

Based upon your informal assessment of the children during this activity, how would you
build upon this activity? What would be the next curriculum activity you would plan in this
area to enhance the childrens learning and why would you choose this next activity?
To give them a sense of different levels which is another topic of spatial awareness, I would
have liked to add small steps for them to step on then step down. I can apply this to a type of
relay activity. In this type of activity children will have more obstacles giving them a wide
range of movement skills and movement concepts.
