Procedures:
1. In working with main idea we have used many different strategies. Today,
we will use a common strategy and one that you have used before in class.
We will use the five finger retell.
2. Lets do a five figer retell together for this passage called “The Wolf.”

worksheet-grade-4-Wolf.pdf
3. Trace your hand on this piece of paper. Now, you will read the following
passage and right the main idea in the center of the hand and the details for
the main idea on the fingers. (a piece of paper and a copy of the passage will
be given to the student)
 Do you know how long it takes the planets to go around the sun? Our
planet, Earth, takes 365 days. Mercury, the smallest planet, only takes
88 days to go around the sun. All of the planets in our solar system
take a different number of days or years to go around the sun.
4. Have you noticed a difference in your ability to determine the main idea
when reading? I have seen you become much stronger in finding the main
idea and details. Remember to keep practicing during your independent
reading time!

**Notes during/after lesson five:

When using the short passage he was better able to determine the main idea and the
supporting details on his own. Overall, I believe he has made progress throughout
the one-on-one process.
