About Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated


Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has a membership of over 200,000 predominately African-American, college educated
women. The Sorority currently has 1,000 chapters located in the United States, England, Japan (Tokyo and Okinawa),
Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas, Jamaica and the Republic of Korea. Since its founding in 1913,
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has established itself as a public service organization that strives to confront the
problems primarily of African Americans thereby benefiting the global community. A wide range of programs addressing
education, health, international development, and the strengthening of the African-American family have emerged and
evolved over the years. Delta Sigma Theta is a private non-profit organization with the purpose of providing services
and programs designed to promote improvement of the human condition.

About The Scholarship


The Atlanta Suburban Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is seeking applicants for its annual
scholarships: Academic Scholarship and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Scholarship. The chapter will
award several thousand dollars in scholarships for the 2015-2016 academic year to talented graduating high school
senior young women.
Thank you for taking the time to review the attached application information. All applicants interested in the scholarship
award must submit an online application and upload all other supporting documentation by 11:59 p.m. on February 1,
2015. NOTE: An application* will be deemed ineligible if there is missing information or documents. Only one (1)
application per applicant (i.e., an applicant cannot apply for both scholarships). Please see the following pages for
scholarship requirements.

Applications will only be accepted electronically. Mailed applications will not be considered for review.

ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP
Who May Apply
Applicant must be a female student who meets the following criteria:
Is a prospective May or June 2015 graduating high school senior who is currently attending high school in City of
Atlanta, Clayton County, or Fayette County
Has a minimum 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale (or 3.75 on 5.0 scale)
Shows evidence of scholastic achievement, good moral character, and community service involvement
Will enroll and attend an accredited college or university beginning Fall Semester 2015
Demonstrates financial need

How To Apply
Complete online application here.
Choose one topic only from the list below and write an essay of 300-500 words. Spelling and grammar will be
considered in reviewing the essay.
1.

Describe and explain your academic and career goals. Include your plans to achieve them and discuss any of your
extracurricular/volunteer activities (both on and off campus) that you may perform.

2.

Describe your most meaningful achievements and how they relate to your field of study and future goals.

3.

Describe how you have demonstrated leadership ability both in and out of school.

Two (2) letters of recommendation (submitted electronically by the recommender of your choice):
o One letter Faculty Recommendation from a teacher, high school counselor, or administrator;
o One letter from a representative of a community service organization in which the applicant has volunteered
within the past 2 years.
o PLEASE NOTE: After submitting your online application, a link will be sent to the recommenders requesting
their response. Your application will not be complete until the recommendation form has been completed.
Recommendations are also due by 11:59 p.m. on February 1, 2015. Please plan accordingly.
Photo: The photo will not be used in the scholarship selection, but rather used for publications of scholarship
recipients, in print and online.
o The photo must be professional in style and content.
o The photo must be of high quality i.e. 300 dpi. In other words, no cell phone photos. The photo should be a
head-shot. There is no need for a full-body photo.
o The photo should not be a party-shot, i.e. taken at a party. No party or scantly-clad photos.
o The photo should not be a "selfie."
o The photo should not be a Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or other social media photo.
o The photo should not be a glamour shot.
o The photo should not have the word proof or any other wording on it.
o The photo should not be Black and White or Sepia. Photos must be in full color.
Copy of official school transcript, which includes first-term grades for the senior year and ranking in high school class
(if available). Transcripts must contain official seal of your high school or signature of the Registrar.
Copy of your SAT or ACT score report
Copy of college acceptance letter(s), if available

When To Apply
February 1, 2015 at 11:59 p.m. is the deadline for submitting online application and supporting documentation. Only
one (1) application per applicant. If you apply for the Academic Scholarship, you may not also apply for the STEM
Scholarship. If an applicant applies to both scholarships, both applications will be disqualified. Finalists in the
review process will be asked to participate in an interview with the Scholarship Committee. Award recipients will be
notified no later than May 2015.

STEM SCHOLARSHIP
Science | Technology | Engineering | Math

Who May Apply


Applicant must be a female student who meets the following criteria:
Is a prospective May or June 2015 graduating high school senior who is currently attending high school in City of
Atlanta, Clayton County, or Fayette County
Has a minimum 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale (or 3.75 on 5.0 scale)
Has taken at least five (5) high school courses in a STEM discipline and earned a B or better in each
Shows evidence of scholastic achievement, good moral character, and community service involvement
Will enroll and attend an accredited college or university beginning Fall Semester 2015
Will declare a major in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math related studies
Demonstrates financial need

Write an essay of 300-500 words on topic below. Spelling and grammar will be considered in reviewing the essay.

Research shows that women and minorities are underrepresented in STEM fields. Describe how you would recommend or
encourage other minorities (including women) to pursue STEM related studies. Please also describe how you will use your
STEM education/experience in the future.
