Introduction
In this study you will find all the dates, sites and standings of the the water polo events of the Olympic
Games since 1900 (under the umbrella of the FINA since 1912), the FINA World Championships, organised
since 1973, the World Cups organised since 1979, the Mens World League created in 2002 and the
Womens World League created in 2004, and finally, the Mens Water Polo Development Trophy, created
in 2007. Also contained in this guide are several classifications, which are listed either by the number of
titles or medals by player or National Federation.
It should be made clear that these standings serve only historical aims and do not hold any sporting
significance, as the comparison between the achievements of players from different generations is always
unbalanced.
This edition may manifest certain errors; we hope that this will be remedied for the next edition with the
assistance of our readers.
LIST OF ABBREVIATIONS The abbreviations used for each National Federation are included at the end
of this volume. However, with regard to Germany, for the period of 1968-1991 the abbreviations FRG for
the Federal Republic and GDR for the Democratic Republic have been used. Russia and Kazakhstan were
part of USSR (URS) until 1991. The acronym TCH was used for Czechoslovakia (CZE + SVK). CRO /
Croatia (until 1992) and Serbia & Montenegro / SCG (until 2002) were part of Yugoslavia (YUG). In 2006,
Serbia (SRB) and Montenegro (MNE) split and are now two separate National Federations of FINA.

MENS WATER POLO
