students a brief overview of todays lesson on Emotional and Spiritual Wellness
Switch to PP slide 2 which has emotional wellness examples. Give students an
overview on emotional wellness. Emotional wellness is about feeling positive about life,
ourselves, and others. Developing emotional wellness gives you the ability to
recognize different feelings in yourself and others and respond appropriately. It helps
you cope with stress, disappointment, and other negative emotions. Having a healthy
emotional wellness can help you in life to develop positive relationships with others and
be autonomous, or not dependent on others.

Title of Lesson: ____Six Dimensions of You: Emotional and Spiritual Wellness

students will
exemplify at least
one example of
positive emotional
and/or spiritual
wellness towards
other students in
their class by
roleplaying
scenarios that
utilize different
emotional situations
and social
standards.

Green/Red/Blue balloons (pre-blown up).

Sitting with the students on the floor, drawn a Venn Diagram of a Green Circle (Positive
emotions) and a Red Circle (Negative emotions). The intersecting area will be Blue
(Neutral emotions. Students will list Positive, Negative, or Neutral emotions they have
recently experienced. For ever emotion they list, they will get a corresponding balloon
of that color. The goal of the game is to get a pile of balloons.
When the students seem done with listing emotions, ask them to hold all of their
balloons in their arms. Ask them to see how many positive emotions they have
compared to negative emotions. Discuss different ways they cope or express having to
carry these emotions, such as wanting to dance around while being happy or crying
when they are upset.

In your own
words, list
some positive,
negative, and
neutral
emotions
youve felt
recently.

Now ask them to look around the room and look at the different emotions everyone
else is holding. Start a discussion about how different people have to carry different
loads of emotions each day.
Now draw a 2nd Venn Diagram on another sheet. Ask students to list different things
that they hear or say that fit in the Positive/Negative/Neutral categories. When they
have finished listing phrases, start the next game.
In this game they will need to talk each other. Ask the students to use the phrases on
the board and for each phrase they use, exchange the same color balloon. If they say
something positive to another student, they should give that student a green balloon. If
they something negative, they need to give them a red.
At the end of the game, discuss how the way we cope with our own emotions can often
affect others around us. Tell them to look at their armful of balloons again and then
look around the room again. How did it make them feel to give another student a green
balloon? How did it make them feel to hand off a red balloon? How did it make them
feel to receive one of those balloons?
Talk about bullying in school and how often you cant see each other emotions, but
everyone is carrying around an armful of emotions. What you say and do is a two way
street of exchanging emotions, making wellness everyones responsibility.
Switch to PP 3 which lists examples of ways to practice emotional health.

Explain to us
how it felt to
give a Positive
or Negative
emotion away.
How about
receiving one?

Title of Lesson: ____Six Dimensions of You: Emotional and Spiritual Wellness

Ask students what they think spiritual wellness is.

*Class discussion on spiritual

wellness

*Listing core values &

practices on card.

Overview of spiritual wellness. Spiritual wellness is the domain of wellness that we use
to answer Who am I and why am I here? Spiritual wellness isnt just about religion.
Instead its about finding a meaning and purpose in your life. Its about developing an
appreciation of both yourself and the world around you. With spiritual wellness you
practice acceptance and tolerance for aspects that cannot be completely understood,
including values and beliefs of others or your own values as they change throughout
your life. At its highest point, its about practicing and participating in activities that
reinforce characteristics you value in yourself and in others.

How would
you define
spiritual
wellness?

Show slide #5 examples of how to practice spiritual wellness.

Have students sit for 1 minute of quiet reflection and think about what the value in life.
Hand out index cards and pencils. Have the students write down what they value most
in life, both in themselves and others. When they are done, tell them to keep this card
and pull it out occasionally to reflect on it. Their values will change throughout life and
one day they might like to see what was important to them as seniors in high school.

*Class participation in
suggesting activities to
promote their core values.

Talk about how in school, students can practice both spiritual and emotional wellness
together. In many schools, students have banded together to begin preventing
bullying. Some students have come up with creative ways to encourage others to be
positive to each and demonstrate positive values to each other.
Show Slide 4: Bullying in schools video.

How could
you
demonstrate
spiritual and
emotional
wellness in
your own
school?

Have students list some positive changes they wish they could see in their own school.
(Write on board easel). After they are done listing them, ask students to list activities
they could do in their own school to create positive change in their school.
Finish up the lesson by reminding them they are the greatest agent of change for
themselves and the world around them. The change can be positive or negativetheir
actions and words decide.
