Journal Entry for September 11, 2014

Today was the day that we would remember so Ms. South came up with an activity for
the students to do for the Remembrance of September 11. We knew the students would not
understand but we wanted them to do something for their parents who lived through it. Each
student hand was painted red, white, and blue. They used their handprints to make the American
flag. That was the morning individual art project while I was doing the morning meeting,
calendar, and the letter M. I took in consideration from yesterday and tried to apply it from
yesterday. I did not come up with a cue to get the students attention yet but I was thinking about
one the whole day. I got something from my mom to help with callouts because she knew that
they will callout. She gave me the idea of a game called Popcorn where you would have the
students call out things that are related to the lesson you want to teach them and you let them call
out as much they can. I used the game for letter M and it worked up to a point because I still
had to get on the ones that did call out. I still need to implement positive behavior when it comes
to calling out by bragging on a student who is not calling out.
To teach the students to write the letter M, Ms. South wanted to me to teach them to
make two lines like how you make the letter H and then teach them to make two slants coming
down which I was surprised worked for the students who had difficulty to make an M in one
fluid motion. I did the correct way of writing it and the wrong way and asked them if that was
right. The lesson was a success for most of the students. I had the students do the word of day
and then Ms. South took over for the rest of the day.
She and I did talk about what else I can take over for the next week where I could take
over open court which is the phonics lesson of the day by blending sounds together to make
words. I want to watch her do the ELA lesson with the big book some more so I could get a
handle on that as well. I want to continue watching her do the Math lesson as well.
