(The Dictator)
ATHLETE

COACH
makes all the decisions

respond to the coachs command

to tell the athlete what to do


winning is the primary
objective

role is to listen, absorb and comply


prevent athletes from fully
enjoying the sport
does not produce the best
performance

This styles was carried forward from the past.


The dictatorship style stifles athletes motivation.

Submissive Style
(The Baby-sitter)
Throw- out- the- ball- and- have- a- good- time approach
The coach
is submissive makes as few decisions as possible
provides little instruction, provides minimal guidance
resolves discipline problems only when absolutely necessary
is a very poor coach
lack of the competence/ confidence to provide instruction and guidance

unable to devote the necessary time and effort to properly preparation


believe that this is best for their athletes
as a baby sitter

Cooperative Style
(The Teacher)
Coach
provides leadership and guidance to his/ her athletes
share decision making with the athlete
provide the structure and rules that allow athletes to set their own goals and
strive for them
providing the right balance between directing athletes and letting them direct
themselves
teaching not only technical and tactical skills but life-skills as well
more trust in athletes, positive effect on their self-image and confidence
have a realistic vision
establish realistic goals and objectives

Cooperative Style
(The Teacher)
Athlete
strive toward achieving their objectives

learning to make decision, to become responsible adults


able to cope with pressure, adapt to changing situations
able to keep contests in perspective, exhibit discipline and maintain concentration
not by fear of the coach, but by a desire for personal satisfaction
