PART 1: ADVOCACY
Describe what an advocate is. Think about a time when you advocated for something. Each member of
the group should describe a time when they advocated for a cause/issue/etc.
An advocate is a person who argues for or supports a cause or policy. For example Andrew Lewarne Fights
to make sure that physiotherapist assistants dont steal our scope of practice and put us out of work. He
does this through expressing our point of view to all the other registered health care professions. I have
many times before explained that a registered massage therapist is highly regulated profession, has a
disciplinary committee and randomly check therapists practices so there are NO happy endings. This is
an example of advocating for our profession.
An advocate also actively confronts issues in order to put forth individual ideas to improve an existing
situation. For example, being referred to as a Masseuse opposed to a Registered Massage Therapist.
Outlining the clear distinction allows others to understand that RMTs are not only registered but set
aside a substantial amount of time devoted to education and practical application.
An advocate is a person who voices what they believe in to the public. They voice their opinions in order
to support something or to promote an idea that they believe in. An example would be working for the
school. I often give tours to prospective students and promote how Humber should be a school that they
should put into consideration.

PART 2: KEY ADVOCACY ISSUES AND MESSAGES

Describe two key advocacy issues affecting the MT profession today. How can SMTs or RMTs support
advocacy issues?
Massage therapists are the only people in the regulated health profession world who are still having
problem with HST, so people like Andrew and his team let the Health community know that this is unfair
through meetings and speeches.
Physiotherapist assistants offering massage sessions in addition to their scope, which takes away clients
from, massage therapists, So people like Andrew remind all the other Registered health professions that
this is not what was agreed upon when everyones scope of practice was determined and set in stone
