Services and Benefits

The Women, Infant and Child program is a federally funded program designed to
help eligible families with nutritional food assistance. The emphasis of the program is to help
families who are at risk receive nutritional assistance, starting from the prenatal stage through the
childs fifth year (Women Infant & Child Supplemental Nutrition Services (WIC), 2014).
Women who are pregnant, breastfeeding or simply just had a baby, can receive monthly food
checks for herself. The monthly vouchers include produce such as bread, milk, juice cheese, eggs
and cereal. Children of the age one to five years also receive monthly coupons that includes
peanut butter, cheese, beans, juices, milk, bread, cereal and eggs. Infants receive formula
according to the kind they need, baby food and cereal as they reach the age of one. WIC, checks
are accepted at WIC stores or a list is provided with such stores. Moreover, WIC, also offers
nutritional counseling for families who want to learn how to stay and eat healthy. In addition,
Breastfeeding counseling is available. Mothers who would like to learn more on breastfeeding or
have questions about breastfeeding can benefit from such service (Illinois Department Of Human
