Content and Achievement Standards


Singing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
o Sing independently, on pitch and in rhythm, with appropriate timbre, diction and
posture while maintaining a steady tempo.
Reading and notating music
Class Goals and Objectives
Strengthen students singing through meaningful participation in singing activities.
Develop students sense of pitch and rhythmic awareness.
Reinforce the concept of steady beat.
Listen for, understand, and perform the concept of dynamics.
Materials
Billy Boy
Procedures
1. Students and instructor will discuss what is said when someone who has kept you waiting
finally arrives.
2. Students will keep a steady beat as instructor models the song Billy Boy
3. Students will echo the song in small segments as modeled by the instructor in order to
learn the song by rote.
4. Students and instructor will sing Billy Boy once the students have learned the entire
song.
5. Students will listen as instructor models the song with changes in dynamics.
6. Students will perform the song with the dynamics, as modeled by the instructor.
7. Students will listen as instructor explains the concept of dynamics and how they are
notated.
8. Students will perform the song without the instructor; girls will sing the first half piano,
boys will sing second half forte while instructor moves about to assess the students
performance. A steady beat will be kept by the students who are not singing.
9. Students will respond individually with appropriate dynamic once the instructor gives
them the adjective that describes it (soft, loud, medium soft/loud)
Assessment of Goals and Objectives
Assessment will be informal and achieved by:
1. monitoring the room during the final performance to make sure students are singing on
pitch with proper dynamics and maintaining a steady beat

2. verbally asking individual students to match the dynamic to its description
Follow up Lessons
Future lessons will focus on hearing dynamic changes in other pieces of music and
discussing the topic of crescendo and decrescendo.
