Classwork: Photosynthesis, cellular respiration and fermentation

Name Marcelo Patricio Isassi Pez

ID A01194128

Instructions: Answer the following questions using animations, power points and your
textbook on chapters 6, 7 and 8.
1. Explain the importance of energy for cellular function (What is energy used for in the
cell?).
Because, thanks to solar energy they give energy to the cells to do the reactions needed,
the energy they use is ATP.
2. Draw and label a molecule of ATP.

3. Describe the function of ATP.

Give the cell energy to keep working, so this way the human body to work. It can be used bt
chemical work, transport work, or mechanical work.
4. Write the overall reaction for photosynthesis.
It converts solar energy into chemical energy. It gives oxygen out of the plants, it takes in CO2.
Describe the phases of photosynthesis by filling in the following chart.
Light phase (light
dependent reaction)

Dark phase (light

independent reaction or
Calvin cycle)

Where does it happen in

the chloroplast?

In the thylakoids.

In the Stroma.

Is light energy needed?

Yes, ATP.

No, not needed.

Stages of photosynthesis

What captures light

energy?

What are the main

starting reactants?

Sunlight and water.

CO2

What are the final

products?

Oxygen.

Carbohydrate.

Why is this phase

important?

It gives oxygen out.

It takes CO2 in.

5. Write the overall reaction for cellular respiration.

Get energy from food chemical energy like carbohydrates, fats and proteins. They release
molecules and they get capture to form ATP.
6. Write the overall reaction for lactate fermentation and mention in what cells it takes
place.
Glucose is broken down by glycolysis into 2 pyruvates; those are fermented to produce 2 lactic
acid molecules. It takes place in, the cytosol of the cell, oxygen is not involved.
7. Write the overall reaction for alcohol fermentation and mention in what cells it takes
place.
It creates alcohol or CO2.
8. Compare fermentation and cellular respiration by filling in the chart.

all their phases

Form ATP when

solar energy is not
present.

Form ATP.

Places where it occur

Cytosol

Glycolysis

specifically in the cell

9. Describe how fermentation is different from cellular respiration.

It is different, because cellular respiration gets energy from food carbohydrates, fats and
proteins and fermentation gets the energy from glycolysis getting broken down.
